Reds win tight affair
23 Feb 2013
The Reds hit back after their loss last weekend to get their first win of the season.
The Reds managed to hold off the Waratahs 25 – 17 after leading 17 – 3 at half time.
The Reds shook off the loss against the Brumbies last weekend to score 17 points in the opening 15 minutes to get their confidence back and get themselves back in contention in the Australian conference.
After being bossed the first half the Waratahs managed to get themselves back in the match, drawing level halfway through the second half to make it an interesting closing quarter.
Dom Shipperley and Ben Tapuai scored early in the match, Tapuai’s try being on the turnover and running in from nearly 60m. The second half started with a try from debutant Israel Folau, who managed to fall over the line after taking a difficult pass. Ben Volavola scored the second, making quite an impact coming on from the bench.
Tapuai, who was captain at this stage due to James Slipper leaving the field at half time, rounded a good display by scoring his second try and sealing the game for the Reds. Mike Harris’ kicking was much better than in the Brumbies match, kicking a late penalty to stretch the lead to 8 points and deny the Waratahs a bonus point.
The expected talking point from this match, being Folau’s Super Rugby debut, failed to deliver with the youngster looking nervous, losing possession on numerous occasions and having to deal with the attentions of Digby Ioane all night. He should improve from this outing.
The Reds extended their impressive record at the Suncorp Stadium, with the Waratahs left ruing missed opportunities in the first half.

Will the Tahs be the Red’s Dragons?
23 Feb 2013, 10:32 am
Sorry Tah’s.
I have cursed you by picking you to win.
Expect the Reds to take it if this second round predictions are anything to go by
23 Feb 2013, 10:32 am
This is war and the Reds will be made the Worried Tarts beaches
23 Feb 2013, 10:33 am
PS have been lucky to score one result at SBru. The BS is my only win so far.
23 Feb 2013, 10:39 am
The Reds were awful last week. Tahs to take it.
23 Feb 2013, 10:40 am
@AiDoc-4:
Ha ha
Same here, only got the Brumbies right this week.
Superbru sucks
23 Feb 2013, 10:41 am
Let’s see what Folau’s got.
23 Feb 2013, 10:46 am
well well
23 Feb 2013, 10:48 am
Here’s a harder game. In this match spot the Aussie. Mostly Kiwis.
23 Feb 2013, 10:48 am
israel folau gets owned.
23 Feb 2013, 10:48 am
Must back the Reds here.
Need the Conference gap to be kept as wide as possible.
23 Feb 2013, 10:51 am
Unlike the Blues it seems the Worried Tarts are still kak.
23 Feb 2013, 10:53 am
Big crowd. Shame about only 10,000 at the Cake Tin.
23 Feb 2013, 10:54 am
Folau having a mare.
23 Feb 2013, 10:55 am
folau having a mare so far…
23 Feb 2013, 10:56 am

23 Feb 2013, 10:57 am
Soccer next?
23 Feb 2013, 10:57 am
So far everybody plays well until I pick them on superbru. This makes me a bit worried that I picked the force to win against the kings
23 Feb 2013, 10:58 am
That’s me for now.
Will switch off the TV, take my daughter out and write off this week as a nightmare.
Cheers all, will join up again when the Sharks play.
This is depressing to watch if you pick the wrong side every game
23 Feb 2013, 11:02 am
Early days yet, but what was Hooper thinking when he left the Brumbies for the Tahs?
23 Feb 2013, 11:02 am
yho…folau kak today hahahaha
23 Feb 2013, 11:02 am
Folau … oh my God.
23 Feb 2013, 11:03 am
“Wallaby in waiting”
23 Feb 2013, 11:04 am
@nortierd-19: Look at the bright side, mate. Not many have such a talent to effortlessly pick the eventual losers.
In old days, when I did betting, in 50-50 games I could easily guess losers as much as about 15 times in a row (mind you never winners more than 4-5 times in a row), shame, it did cost a lot of money so I quit while still sane.
23 Feb 2013, 11:04 am
@kaksioek-20: he was thinking “with jake buying pocock. i won’t get game time here off to Sydney i go”
23 Feb 2013, 11:04 am
Comedy of errors, anyone?
23 Feb 2013, 11:05 am
@Transformation-25: I think he left before Pocock signed – almost sure of it. Jake chased Pocock to replace him.
23 Feb 2013, 11:05 am
@kaksioek-26: Not the best Aussie game, for sure. Still way better than 1st half in Pretoria which says everything.

Waratahs set to sign Brumbies flanker Hooper
Article Published: Tuesday 17 April 2012
Brumbies Super Rugby flanker Michael Hooper looks set to leave Canberra to join the Waratahs in Sydney from next season.
The Wallabies hopeful is understood to be on the verge of closing a deal with the Waratahs even though the Brumbies and Rebels have shown their interest.
The 20-year-old’s contract comes to an end at the end of this season and his departure will be a blow for the Australian Conference leaders.
Hooper was named named player of the tournament in last year’s junior World Cup and has had a stand-out season so far in 2012.
His best performance to date was against the Highlanders in Round five.
A Waratahs spokesperson has refused to confirm the deal but did admit that officials were locked in a number of contract negotiations, including with players at other franchises.
“It is speculation and we don’t comment on speculation,” she told AAP.
Waratahs officials are also said to be in talks with back-rowers Dave Dennis and Wycliff Palu about extending their contracts.
23 Feb 2013, 11:10 am
@polaris-28: True, from the viewer’s perspective. I still don’t think the Aussie sides will bother the SA sides much – apart from the Kings, of course.
23 Feb 2013, 11:11 am
Philander batting like a real mccoy Test all rounder
23 Feb 2013, 11:13 am
McKibbin doing a Jantjes on the Tahs
23 Feb 2013, 11:14 am
Folau, take a seat. Please.
23 Feb 2013, 11:15 am
Shocking debut.
23 Feb 2013, 11:17 am
@kaksioek-27:
@kaksioek-29: Yes, when I read your #27 I recalled it being announced very early in the season.
23 Feb 2013, 11:18 am
@BrumbiesBoy-35: I bet he regrets it already – probably regretted it last year already. Hope he got more money out of it. At least Sydney is more fun than Canberra.
23 Feb 2013, 11:23 am
Michael Cheika looks like a guy I work with. Both seem to be overly self-confident, with no apparent reason to be.
23 Feb 2013, 11:23 am
I suspect the TAHS getting a tongue lashing halftime .
23 Feb 2013, 11:23 am
Yep maybe it would’ve been better to start Folau off the bench…he’s been shocking so far..nothing going the way of the Tahs so far! Reds on a roll
23 Feb 2013, 11:24 am
@kaksioek-30: We’ll see, still early days.
23 Feb 2013, 11:25 am
Folau’s debut even worse than Lote Tuqiri’s…
23 Feb 2013, 11:30 am
Tahs 9, 10, 12 is pretty k@k
23 Feb 2013, 11:30 am
@Petri-42: 15?
23 Feb 2013, 11:32 am
@mxhosa-41: Tuqiri came good though – wonder if Folau will. Perhaps he will be more of a Sailor, but without the physicality – which doesn’t sound good at all.
23 Feb 2013, 11:34 am
@kaksioek-43: 15 is having a mare, but I give him the benefit. Haven’t seen enough of him – he might still come good.
But Tahs 9, 10, 12 will NEVER be good.
23 Feb 2013, 11:36 am
@kaksioek-36:
I’m sure it is!
23 Feb 2013, 11:36 am
@kaksioek-44:
To be fair to Lote, he was up against, quite possibly, the greatest winger of all time…
23 Feb 2013, 11:38 am
@mxhosa-47: Who was that? I don’t remember Lote’s debut.
23 Feb 2013, 11:39 am
@BrumbiesBoy-46: So do you live in Canberra? I’ve never actually been there, but it has a bad reputation. And Sydney is quite nice – reminds me of Hong Kong.
23 Feb 2013, 11:40 am
Tom Carter drops it again
23 Feb 2013, 11:41 am
@kaksioek-48:
Rupeni Caucaunibuca
23 Feb 2013, 11:42 am
caucau was a monster!
23 Feb 2013, 11:43 am
@mxhosa-51: @Petri-52: Ah yes, awesome in his prime.
23 Feb 2013, 11:44 am
@kaksioek-49: No, I live in Jhb…but they say that the SA city that Canberra can best be likened to is Bloemfontein!
23 Feb 2013, 11:47 am
@BrumbiesBoy-54: I see. So are you just a big Jake White fan? It’s funny to think how much his continued success is burning Skop’s ***
23 Feb 2013, 11:48 am
Yawn …. go Bulls!!!
23 Feb 2013, 11:48 am
Folau hardly deserves that try
23 Feb 2013, 11:48 am
@kaksioek-49: Happy ending……..?
23 Feb 2013, 11:48 am
Folau gets a lucky try
23 Feb 2013, 11:49 am
Folau takes a poor pass & scores on debut
23 Feb 2013, 11:50 am
Absolutely rubbish game..
To start off the waratahs look like they have played a game before this one or they did nothing all pre season.
Handling errors!
Poor tackles
Folau looks like he wants to be somewhere else….. His lines and positioning will see him dropped. In league he used to be vicious!
23 Feb 2013, 11:50 am
Israel he may be already but looooong looong way to go to be a Dagg.
23 Feb 2013, 11:50 am
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-58: Sure.
23 Feb 2013, 11:50 am
@kaksioek-55: No, I’ve been supporting them since around ’97.
Don’t tolerate government interference in sport.
Then Jake heard about me and decided to go ask them for a job!
And the rest is history, clever man is “our” Jake!
23 Feb 2013, 11:51 am
Folau will be a superstar…can’t wait till he carves up the Sa sides, except the Kings
23 Feb 2013, 11:51 am
@wallabie.-61: Folau is wondering which A-League team he can sign for.
23 Feb 2013, 11:52 am
@wallabie.-61: Howzit Walla. Hows things in your side of town? @polaris-62: Clever
23 Feb 2013, 11:52 am
@BrumbiesBoy-54: nope, Welkom
23 Feb 2013, 11:53 am
@BrumbiesBoy-64: You and Skop should spend more time chatting. The rest of us will get some popcorn and watch.
23 Feb 2013, 11:53 am
@Te Rangatira-65: Long way to go. Carving up SA teams…….. Yeah right.
23 Feb 2013, 11:55 am
@Te Rangatira-65: Look’s like he’d have trouble carving up a pumpkin at the moment.
23 Feb 2013, 11:56 am
Bob Skinstad talks a lot of kak but he was on the money when he said watching Aus derbies is like watching paint dry.
23 Feb 2013, 11:56 am
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-70:
Mate, I’ve seen him play 50 or so games, albeit League, you’ve watched him 50 minutes……yeah right
23 Feb 2013, 11:58 am
Fark me the handling skills are shocking
23 Feb 2013, 11:59 am
Tahs looking marginally better
23 Feb 2013, 11:59 am
@Te Rangatira-73: Still to impress…………might take him 50 games more
23 Feb 2013, 11:59 am
@Angostura-68: Or maybe Polokwane?
23 Feb 2013, 12:00 pm
“Don’t go anywhere.”
Nice try, “Clarkie”.
23 Feb 2013, 12:00 pm
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-72:
***** that’s a bit rich after the dribble you guys serve up most of the time.
23 Feb 2013, 12:00 pm
The handling in this game is putrid.
Some of these guys couldn’t a cold.
23 Feb 2013, 12:01 pm
@kaksioek-69: All I ask for is some time to buy some shares in the popcorn industry.
23 Feb 2013, 12:01 pm
Now the Paks are going to be subjected to the fiercest bowling attack on the planet. No Kallis and no Morkel of course.
189 all out for them
23 Feb 2013, 12:01 pm
@I am a stormer-80:
couldn’t catch a cold
23 Feb 2013, 12:02 pm
@NZINCHINA-79: Well do you rate this kak we’re seeing here as top notch entertainment?
23 Feb 2013, 12:03 pm
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-84:
No but the game last night was atrocious as well.
23 Feb 2013, 12:03 pm
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-67:
All good buddy and you?
Been up late over the last few days watching the pistorius saga unfold. A horrible tragedy!
23 Feb 2013, 12:05 pm
@NZINCHINA-85: Well as a Bull I only looked at the final score and not the comments collumn but yeah not a real apectacle either but in all honesty very few Aus derbies are edge of the seat stuff nowadays.
23 Feb 2013, 12:05 pm
I hope the Sharks and Cheetahs put on a better show.
23 Feb 2013, 12:05 pm
Tahs try!
23 Feb 2013, 12:06 pm
@Te Rangatira-73: Agree, cant judge him after one game. But to be fair he looks like he will need a long period of adaption
23 Feb 2013, 12:08 pm
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-76:
Well…it wont be that long for my words to be vindicated……
23 Feb 2013, 12:09 pm
@wallabie.-86: Ja boet terrible indeed. Very long way to go for him
23 Feb 2013, 12:11 pm
Told you many a game was saved or almost saved by a good tongue lashing halftime or in nick mallet’s case before the game and then round 2 in the middle and round 3 at the end.
23 Feb 2013, 12:12 pm
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-87:
Yer you’re right the old NSW QLD games used to be good but their talent is spread too thin these days hence the poor quality matches, we need less teams.
You guys play a different type of rugby to us so that’s probably what you prefer but if you’re going to run with a forward orientated game your forwards need to dominate and I just don’t see your forwards dominating enough up front to beat our teams this year, just my opinion we’ll see what happens.
23 Feb 2013, 12:15 pm
Canon- another one of the bruise brothers!!
23 Feb 2013, 12:19 pm
The most bizarre thing is that the Aussies pushed for this conference format so that they could have more “Aussie derbies” (dry heave) and their TV viewership has supposedly increased as a result. They actually enjoy watching these games, and prefer them to games against sides from the other two countries. Extremely insular – quite American, really.
23 Feb 2013, 12:19 pm
@Crumpet-90:
I spose I put it out there….Superstar an all that….but I know he can adapt….Go Reds
23 Feb 2013, 12:20 pm
@NZINCHINA-94: Very true although from a Springbok point of view I reckon we have enough of everything to contest but overall the NZ teams are the ones to beat this year. Looking forward to some very bruising encounters.
23 Feb 2013, 12:22 pm
Poor tackle from Folau.
23 Feb 2013, 12:22 pm
Folau was good in league but with Lockyer, inglis, Cronk, Slater, Thurston in a back line for Origin anyone could be. I like the guy but your blowing steam outta your arse if you think he is going to have an immediate impact on the game. There is nothing new about his game that he is going to bring. What the evolution of all day up and unders? Limited tackles in league and on that final kick is when he was at his best. Not much else really.
23 Feb 2013, 12:23 pm
Fark, Bru is screwed well and truly for 3rd straight time.
23 Feb 2013, 12:23 pm
That Carter for the Tahs is a greedy…no awareness…farkup
23 Feb 2013, 12:24 pm
The worst attempt to live up to the hype since SBW versus the White Buffalo.
23 Feb 2013, 12:26 pm
@Te Rangatira-97: Unfortunately it has become to much of a syndrome of so many Stormers supporters to hype a player even before he has set a foot in the right direction to hail him as the newest latest and greatest so I have become a bit numb to new player hype. He has the credentials so lets see what happens
23 Feb 2013, 12:26 pm
If Folau’s specialty is the high ball then why haven’t the Tahs kicked one for him?
23 Feb 2013, 12:27 pm
Another Folau highlight.
23 Feb 2013, 12:27 pm
@kaksioek-103: And that ended up as the fakap of the year thusfar
23 Feb 2013, 12:28 pm
@NZINCHINA-94:
The problem is that there are very few Banana Benders or Mexicans playing for their own state. Most of them are Kiwis and they don’t have the hate.
23 Feb 2013, 12:28 pm
Bru moer toe…….*****
23 Feb 2013, 12:28 pm
It’s hype from Australian press mate you need look no further than fox sports articles from the past 2 years to see the **** spill out. Especially the World Cup
Year. Wow.
23 Feb 2013, 12:30 pm
OK gents have a fantastic afternoon and enjoy. Off for some beer and biltong for the games this afternoon. Money on Sharkies and the Force.
Enjoy guys
23 Feb 2013, 12:30 pm
Now for Italy to beat Wales. They were awesome against the French.
23 Feb 2013, 12:30 pm
Bru good. Only blues screwed it so far
23 Feb 2013, 12:30 pm
If Folau doesn’t improve soon, expect to read about him signing for a league team – if he can find any takers.
23 Feb 2013, 12:31 pm
@kaksioek-96:
Yes the aussies love the derbies because there is over 100 years of history especially between reds and tahs. also when a visiting team is here many supporters are choosing between league and union.
Playing a SA side is not that appealing for many supporters due to what they could get in league and afl. There are many long history rivalaries (sp) inthese other codes
If union was the only sport played in aus like what it is in RSA it would be a different story and supporters would watch most games.
23 Feb 2013, 12:32 pm
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-104:
Yeah Kwagga…he has the skills and all that, but the attitude needs to be there….hopefully he gets caught under a ruck or something and gets angry……
23 Feb 2013, 12:34 pm
After no-skills borefests in Pretoria and Brisbane looking forward to entertaining quality game in Sochi.
Russia v Georgia.
Oh, well.
23 Feb 2013, 12:35 pm
If an NZ side had Folau I am sure he would grow faster through our style of play than the Australians. Especially the Waratahs. Good luck changing their lack lustred attacking minds. Carter needs to go. Why they have persisted with that drop kick for so long is beyond a joke. TPN has no pride for the gold jersey let alone the NSW jersey. I was gambling with him at the casino on the Goldy the day before that tri nations game where the Wallabies beat us and he even wanted the ABs to win.
23 Feb 2013, 12:42 pm
@BrumbiesBoy-64: You supported foreign teams pre-94 as well?in fairness to the ANC ,they never selected other countries’ teams for them.that ultimate honour still belongs to your beloved NP .you gladly supported teams who never allowed for black selection. You never had a conscience then ,but suddenly you developed one after the end of white rule.you are a man of questionable morals…no doubt about it.
23 Feb 2013, 12:47 pm
Another Aussie derby out of the way.
23 Feb 2013, 12:58 pm
@S_K-119:
Why bother?
23 Feb 2013, 13:06 pm
Go Force!!!! Smack the entitlement Kings proper.
23 Feb 2013, 13:07 pm
@S_K-119: Listen here pseudo Irishman, have you conveniently forgotten that the rest of the world had correctly applied sporting and other sanctions because of South Africa’s racist policies, and as a result there weren’t any teams to support anyway?
And that entitled South Africans voted to rectify this scenario in the two referendums of the 80s?
How very convenient for you.
The biggest fault of your equally racist ANC Government is that they obviously haven’t learnt from the years of NP rule that you do not mix sport and politics.
And not that it’s any of your business, but I don’t have a problem telling you that I never supported the Nationalist Party ideal as I was brought up to believe that their policies were wrong and discriminatory.
23 Feb 2013, 13:21 pm
I’m beginning to feel rather sorry for the guys at SA Rugby Magazine. No comments on todays games, 5 on Bulls/Stormers and 2 on Chiefs.
It must be rather disheartening for the guys writing the stories.
The least Keo could do is make a few comments there.
23 Feb 2013, 13:24 pm
As I recall an aging Sterling Mortlock made a certain SBW look a bit ordinary in his first game too – Folau will pick up quickly. This match perhaps not a great advertisement for ball handling however opening round jitters can be excused for Tahs and still confident Oz in for a much improved season this year.
23 Feb 2013, 13:25 pm
David
Who the hell wants to comment on a forum where you have to be civil all the time on pain of being banned whenever Simon Borchardt dislikes what you have to say?
No thanks.
23 Feb 2013, 13:27 pm
@Tacitus-126:
But you’re always civil Tac, you shouldn’t have any problems.
23 Feb 2013, 13:32 pm
BB out.
Back later.
23 Feb 2013, 13:42 pm
@Tacitus-126:
How about those Bulls? Did last night’s win do anything to change your opinion on the current team?
23 Feb 2013, 13:49 pm
@David-124: I feel sorry for our guppy pal, Richard Ferguson, having to watch convict **** and then write a report on it. No matter how much Keo pays him it just anit worth it.
23 Feb 2013, 13:56 pm
Keo a couple weeks ago you wrote about “The real deal” well from what I saw today I give Izzy Falou one season and he will be running back to league.
23 Feb 2013, 13:58 pm
@Cannon-131:
He is only with the tahs and union for one season……Unless of course he changes his mind.
23 Feb 2013, 14:03 pm
@wallabie.-132: dude another game is to long, izzy is kak.
23 Feb 2013, 14:05 pm
@RL-130:
He has joined Keo at the right time….not having to write about the Lions!!
23 Feb 2013, 14:05 pm
@David-127:
Keo might disagree after the Louis Luyt article of the other day. He really worked me up with that posthumous character assassination.
Hehe.
23 Feb 2013, 14:09 pm
@Cannon-133:
He was rubbish today. He did not even look like he wanted to be out there!
I have seen him in league and he was a magnificent but i think him having to think his positional off the ball play all the time is getting to him mentally. I remember lote being kak in his first few games.
15 is more technical than wing and i think falou needs to be at wing. Thre were many opportunities when falou could have been dangerous when he joined the line in an attacking move. But being out of position all those opps went to waste.
23 Feb 2013, 14:10 pm
@mxhosa-129:
Well, my calculation before the season was that the Bulls would achieve the following log points from the various phases of the season:
SA Conference games – 30 points
Tour Down Under – 6 points
Home games against overseas teams – 18 points
Byes – 8 points.
That adds up to a total of 62 points. I miscalculated it as 59 points intitially.
So I still stick to my 62 point prediction. The 30 points from the SA conference assumes 4 point home game wins against the Stormers and Sharks, and picking up a losing bonuspoint in Durban and Cape Town each.
That gives you 10 points from the Stormers Sharks round robin games, and add to that 20 points from the Cheetahs and Kings games (two full houses against each team)
So so far, things remain on track for my prediction.
62 points is what I hope it will be.
23 Feb 2013, 14:14 pm
@Tacitus-137:
Where my prediction could fall flat, is on tour. We have a hell of a tough tour, against teams we traditionally always struggle against.
We may well come from tour without a single win. In which case the 6 points from tour could be more like 2 points.
But if we can sneak a win against either the Brumbies or Blues, well, then 6 points are achievable.
23 Feb 2013, 14:15 pm
@wallabie.-136: Your right man, for me that’s the most worrying thing about him. Often he had drawn in two three defenders but tried rather to run through them than off load. This is something I don’t think you can coach it’s just natural instinct for others i.e. Sonny-Bill
23 Feb 2013, 14:17 pm
@wallabie.-134:
23 Feb 2013, 14:27 pm
@Tacitus-137:
Just to think bulls will get 20 points from the bottom two teams in the RSA conference and a huge net points gain!
23 Feb 2013, 14:34 pm
56/3 after 20 overs.
Swing bowler Abbott doing well on debut.
23 Feb 2013, 14:35 pm
@RL-142:
Whose playing?

Don’t be naive
That was just a due payment from Keo to his masters at Saru and above, I doubt such a convoluted rant would have come from any credible writer who is aware of the facts knowing his reputation would be on the line

62 points should be enough to get you guys into the playoffs. As I said last year, I think the Bulls are a season or two away from being serious title contenders. Next year the likes of Willemse, Hattingh, Kirsten, Mellett, Marcel vd Merwe, Pollard, Serfontein, et al. will be in their second SR season with the team.

@Tacitus-138:
That may not be how SARU would like to have it?
Assuming -for argument sake – their target is to get the Stormers to the 2nd round of the Playoff with the home field advantage, like it was last year?
Then your prediction might fall short

@mxhosa-121: Sorry, I didn’t see your post earlier.
You’re 100% right.
I will never support any South African team or sport while the racist quota system is in place and my stance is not negotiable.
“No “abnormal” sport in a “normal” society” is my motto.
Aluta continua.
Have your say
