Sharks to see off Stormers

Sharks to see off Stormers

MARK KEOHANE writes Stormers fans must prepare for more Super Rugby misery in Durban.

The Sharks will beat the Stormers in Durban. It won’t be an easy victory but when these two teams play one point is emphatic enough in the chase to being the best South African team in the competition.

The Sharks were magnificent in beating the Stormers in Cape Town in the 2012 semi-final season and in turn the Stormers, in the guise of Western Province in the Currie Cup final, were as magnificent in winning the title in Durban.

The Sharks were surprisingly edgy and tentative in the final quarter in Bloemfontein to hang on against the Cheetahs, but then the Cheetahs did beat the Stormers in Bloemfontein in a pre-season match.

I know Elton Jantjies will be better but the Stormers are missing the colossal presence of lock Eben Etzebeth more even than the Sharks are missing the influence of Bok hooker Bismark du Plessis.

The Sharks pack is good enough to get an edge, especially in the collisions, but it’s the Sharks back division that will trouble the Stormers more than the Bulls did.

Pat Lambie asks more attacking questions at flyhalf and Frans Steyn has a physicality at No 12 that wasn’t there in the Bulls line-up.

The back three of the Sharks, as a unit, also shades the visitors.

It is going to be difficult for the Stormers and while away defeats aren’t a train smash in the tournament, it does add to the pressure of a ‘must win’ situation when playing at home.

The Bulls will win easily against the Force and get the bonus point and the Cheetahs will be competitive against the Chiefs and may just get a bonus point for tries scored if the game opens up as expected. The Chiefs will win and get five league points.

The Kings will enjoy their second great weekend in the competition because of the bye. Thereafter it will become decidedly tougher and demanding for a squad blessed with passion and desire but very limited on pedigree at this level.

For those who like to forget when I do get it right, 3/3 last week in relation to the SA teams. That’s right I couldn’t find too many on Twitter and the inbox was predictably empty with the clever guys who offered such articulate abuse at me picking the Bulls and Kings to win.

I expect another slow post match response when the Sharks do the business in Durban.

    I’m confused now.

If the brokebacks lose are they still the overwhelming favourites to win the SA conference.

Did they lose to the Bulls only because the ref made a mistake and because of the absence of Estebeth.

    Hmmmmm.

BTW Keo when is KeoTV relaunching?

Stormers to struggle. Set pieces are a joke, captain on supplements for the aged not steroids, still figuring out how to score tries and flyhalf that is so low on confidence doesn’t want to kick at posts. Locks after last week wont want lineouts and hooker been permanently withdrawn from any activity that resembles darts. Missing their best loose forward and actual captain. Sharks by 15.

The only time the Stormers would have been installed as faves this season, was if HG and Tyrone happened to support them.

  • 17.Robzim: Reply to this comment

WP beat the Sharks in the CC final mainly as a result of completely destroying their lineouts.

The man who did the damage last time (Etsebeth) is not playing while his very able replacement (Bekker) will unfortunately not only have to deal with the Sharks’ locks but also with the wayward throwing of his own teammate Fourie.

The return of Frans Steyn wont make much difference- de Allende should not have many problems to deal with him while his captaincy skills (or lack of it) might be tested when the heat is on.

Taking everything into consideration I do however think the Sharks are favourites to win by about 7 points.

Everyone keeps talking about how this is a must win for the Stormers. Well just to be clear, the Stormers do not see it that way. Allister was very adamant yesterday in saying that the process of gelling and playing properly, synergy if you will (to coin an AC favorite) was all important. he even went so far as to say that the result was not nearly as important as how they play.

    Waitforit…

@Bagel-19: Will score if he can get his head out his butt after first scrum, If Bulls front row annihilated him imagine what Beast and Jannie will do. I predict Kitzhoff will be playing in the backline with Bekker for most of the game.

    This will be very close.

Stormers missing Etsebeth and a their normal hooker and JdJ.
Sharks missing Alberts and their normal hooker and Whitehead.

No way will the Stormers be bossed up front like they were against the Bulls.
Theyll come out firing and hopefully the Sharks can just keep their composure in the latter stages.

  • 29.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

Another clinical loss coming up for the conference title holders, followed by an equally clinical loss against the tournament title holders. Such consistency – frightening stuff for the other teams in the competition.

  • 30.Bouts: Reply to this comment

This could be bad for the Stormers. If they lose to the Sharks, and lose well as it currently seem, the Stormers will face the Chiefs next.

This COULD mean the Stormers could be the bottom team after Round 3. Could possibly climb with their bye in round 4, but the Force, Kings and Rebels already had their byes (with points) by that time. And then they face a motivated Brumbies team. Ouch.

  • 31.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@FrenklyMuDeah-27: I think that AC is trying to see the bigger picture here. We have a lot of games to play this year, it’s not made or broken in the first 2 weeks. Ask the Sharks.

He also said that they were not feeling under any external pressure, all the pressure that they felt was internal after what they referred to as a very poor showing last week.

  • 35.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

@Robzim-17: Yes Rob the Sharks are the favourites for sure. The Stormers will have to put up a much better fight if they want to be competitive at all.

Eben is a huge loss. Steenkamp is no no. 4 lock. The Sharks will throw a lot to the front and use shortened lineouts. IMO Burden is not too safe at lineout time and will not want to throw at 5 where Bekker will be waiting. We have discussed Fourie’s weakness but Burden will also miss his jumpers occasionally.

If Proudfoot has done his homework he should use Bekker in the front (from time to time) on opposition ball, if only to make Burden nervous.

@stormersboy-31: Just joking. But seriously, surely intention must be to win every game from start of season to stop yourself getting into position Sharks did last year. Don’t understand “building phases”, “more important to gel”. Best thing that can happen to a team is to win, a bad win is much more inspirational than a good loss.

    Tank Lanning
Take a bow you Kinky Kings! That was a start to Super Rugby that not many of us predicted for the newbies from PE. In fact, only 14% of all SuperBru players picked this win, with the average pick being Force by 11. And SuperBru is a pretty good indicator these days.
No matter the opposition (and I have a feeling that the Force are going to be shown up as the walking bonus point this year), the reaction to the win by both players and fans showed the passion for rugby in the region. Yes there has been a lot wrong with how the Kings concept has been handled by almost all parties involved, but to come through all that and sneak a win in their first game at this level – something not done by any team that has joined the tournament late – is something worth celebrating.
One got the feeling that it was about the badge and the jersey for the players, almost a throwback to the amateur era where rugby was about a community doing something they loved doing in order to share a pie and a beer afterwards – often with the opposition as well!
And there was a little of that in Maties win over Tukkies in Monday night’s Varsity Cup humdinger.
With half of last year’s SA Under-20 side playing for Tukkies, along with giant lock Paul Willemse – a man bought from the Lions by the Bulls, and one who is on record in saying that he wants to play for the Springboks this year – it is palpably clear to all that this side from Pretoria is a fully professional unit.
In fact, overheard at the ground on Monday evening was a comment from a Bulls official that went along the lines of “It’s great for us (the Bulls) to be able to run two concurrent squads so we can give guys like Willemse a run” implying that no longer is the Tukkies side a mere student side playing Varsity Cup rugby, it is a side being managed by the Bulls rugby union.
And yet the all student, mostly amateur Maties side were able to pull off an unlikely victory. And a bit like the Kings victory on Saturday, this down to passion, guts and wanting to do it for a common cause.
One has to wonder if this is indeed the road that Varsity Cup rugby should be traversing, though?
I am told there are two divergent camps among the powers that be. One says who cares about the rules regarding student eligibility and money being paid to players, let’s put the best players and standard of rugby out there on Monday nights. The other camp is more about keeping the tournament amateur, encouraging young men to study something that will help them in their post rugby careers, and letting the rugby take care of itself.
No matter which camp you find yourself in, the one thing that is clear is that the rules need to be the same for everyone. And if Varsity Cup choose the more professional path, they will eventually lose the likes of Maties, Ikeys and Wits, because those universities simply will not change their entrance requirements or downgrade their degrees on offer.
For the Kings, though, there is no debate. Super Rugby is a fully professional tournament that will see them taking on the best provincial sides in the world. With passion for the jersey and support from the community not being enough to sustain a season long campaign.
    What a start, though!

Just want to ask why the Sharks are “favourites”?

Stormers lost last week, but they lost an away game at the Bulls – hardly an easy task… As the “kenners” on this side were stating – “You would expect the homeside, especially the Bulls to win”

Sharks won away, but it was rather close and their defence looks rather shaky… The Stormers Bok laden backline are sure to cut them to shreds… Even their B side did this the last time they played eachother…

Stormers pack is far more formidable than the Sharks, surely…

Especially the loosies… The superlatives extolling Vermeulen, Elstadt and Kolis are too numerous to mention… What chance do Kanko, Deysel and Coetzee have to even compete…

And lets not forget that Deysel got farked up six love just last year by the C team Canuck import… What chance does he have against mighty Elstadt?

As for Kanko against Vermeulen – it might as well be Clark Kent vs the Incredible Hulk…

So, how thefuck can the Sharks be labelled “favourites”….

    Sh.it Captain
    Sh.it Stadium
    Sh.it supporters
    Sh.it players…

Clearly they are farked according to the inside knowledge of the “kenners” on this “esteemed” Rugby site…

Durban – Sport24 chief writer Rob Houwing, in his regular Thursday South African Super Rugby preview, suggests wins for the Sharks and Bulls this weekend, with the Stormers and Cheetahs left ruing second successive defeats.

    SPORT24 PICK OF THE CROP

    SHARKS v STORMERS, Durban

    When: Saturday, 19:10
    Referee: Jonathan Kaplan (SA)
    TV: M-Net, SS1, SHD
Commentators: Andy Capostagno, Bob Skinstad (Eng), Hennie Koortzen, Gary Boshoff (Afrik), Kaunda Ntunja, Makhaya Jack (Xho)
Long-range weather outlook: Partly cloudy, warm, light breeze

Background: The Sharks probably packed the best collective punch of any South African side in the first round of local conference action. They appear to have all bases covered and, even against a very spirited Cheetahs side in Bloemfontein, ruled the roost in the engine room and produced plenty of high-calibre three-quarter play. Throw in the fact that Pat Lambie began the campaign with aplomb at No 10, and they have reason to fancy they’ll lower the Stormers’ colours again. As for the visitors, they struggled to integrate their various Lions acquisitions against the Bulls … and yes, the continued absence of Messrs Burger and Etzebeth could be costly at Kings Park. Never write this bunch off, mind you.

Key head-to-head: Still a couple of weeks shy of his 22nd birthday, former Paarl Boys’ High favourite FRANS MALHERBE has the unenviable Stormers chore this Saturday (preferred to last week’s slightly disappointing Pat Cilliers) of trying to tame the Beast. Bok loosehead prop TENDAI MTAWARIRA was all fire and brimstone at scrum-time against the Cheetahs, particularly when Coenie Oosthuizen suddenly appeared in front of him in the second half. Now Stormers No 3 Malherbe must somehow try to find a firm right shoulder … big tick for his own possible Test future if he manages it!

    Recent history: March 3, 2012: Stormers 15 Sharks 12; May 26, 2012: Sharks 25 Stormers 20; July 28, 2012 (semi-final): Stormers 19 Sharks 26

Rob Houwing’s prediction: Look, I do believe that the Stormers will be desperate to quickly remind the world that they aren’t nearly as rag-tag as they looked at Loftus last Friday. Grim motivation will not be in short supply. But I also suggest that the Sharks are slightly more cohesive and offer both greater skill and grunt at this early-season juncture. So Sharks to squeeze out a win by two points?

    SA GAME 2

    BULLS v FORCE, Pretoria

    When: Saturday, 17:05
    Referee: Jason Jaftha (SA)
    TV: M-Net, SS1, SHD
Commentators: Hugh Bladen, Joel Stransky (Eng), John van Rensburg, Toks van der Linde (Afrik)
Long-range weather outlook: Partly cloudy, warm, light breeze

Background: The man from Western Australia must have been pretty chuffed to see many anti-Kings pundits in South Africa tipping them to put away the rookie PE outfit by 25 points last week! Only, er, things didn’t quite turn out that way, did they? So with the Force instead playing second fiddle by 12 points, their confidence can’t exactly be sky-high as they prepare to tackle the Bulls in their unwelcoming Highveld fortress. You have to believe Pierre Spies and company will only botch this one if a crazy dose of complacency visits their camp. They’ll go on overseas tour with a two from two record … surely?

Key head-to-head: The Force are a little short of household names since the respective departures of people like Nathan Sharpe and David Pocock. But that roving right wing with the trademark generous locks NICK CUMMINS is an increasingly decent Test presence for the Wallabies. Up against him, in the Bulls’ No 11 shirt, will be the panther-like, prolific try-scoring BJORN BASSON. You just feel that this match will have more fluidity and space on offer than in the dour Bulls-Stormers derby, so the Loftus faithful may see these two try to outwit or outpace each other several times.

Recent history: Teams did not meet last season.

Rob Houwing’s prediction: The Bulls will know, even as they delightedly banked victory over the Stormers, that they didn’t produce much in the way of champagne rugby … neither did their southern opponents, of course. They will hope their tried-and-trusted formula – subdue, then penetrate – comes into play for a full house of five log points from this one. Bulls by 19.

    SA GAME 3

    CHIEFS v CHEETAHS, Hamilton

    When: Saturday, 08:35
    Referee: Mike Fraser (NZ)
    TV: SS1, CSN, SHD
    Commentators: (New Zealand panel)
Long-range weather outlook: Cloudy, mild, moderate wind

Background: Wow, what a start by the Waikato crew in defence of their title. I was lukewarm in pre-season about their retention prospects, but last weekend’s rousing, full-house win against the Highlanders in their own habitat proved something of an eye-opener! The Cheetahs had some brilliant moments even in defeat to the Sharks last weekend, and in some ways touring Australasia so early may have advantages for them … warm and hopefully dry conditions would be very much to their liking, given their traditional ball-in-hand enterprise. But it may also, alas, be a tad too early for them to really hit their straps, outside of South Africa. Starting the adventure on the back of a loss hardly helps.

Key head-to-head: With Juan Smith sadly no longer around and Heinrich Brussow still bedevilled by niggles, the trademark burly, blond figure of ADRIAAN STRAUSS stands out like a beacon for the Cheetahs, and not just because he leads the troops. The Bok hooker, who so seldom has an anonymous game, comes up against another worthy opponent in the No 2 stakes on Saturday, as the Chiefs have restored that combative Maori HIKA ELLIOT to the middle of the front row, after he missed the opener in Dunedin through a calf problem; rookie Rhys Marshall drops to the bench.

    Recent history: April 14, 2012: Cheetahs 33 Chiefs 39

Rob Houwing’s prediction: The Chiefs camp have been talking up the Cheetahs for playing “a brand of rugby like ours”, which is at least partly true, but it is extremely hard to see the Free Staters toppling the champs in their tour opener, I’m afraid … Chiefs by 16.

    @grant10-59:

I hold predictions of wins by 2 or 3 points in great disdain. If a game is so close that it comes down to one penalty either way, then your prediction is essentially meaningless.

When someone says Team X is going to win by 2 points, he is really saying he doesn’t have a clue what’s going to happen. Which is about right for Rob Houwing’s normal predictions.

  • 64.Bouts: Reply to this comment

@Heavens Game-52: In essence the loosies of the Cheetahs were a better unit than that of the Sharks. Problem is, they mean little when the tight 5 fails. Stormers is pretty much in the same ‘boat’ up front as the Cheetahs.

One area where the Sharks could struggle would be the lineouts. Even though the Cheetahs were miserable in area as well, they did manage to mess up the Sharks lineouts. It did work out okay for them, but with stronger jumpers the Stormers should give them a lot of trouble.

And no. The Stormers backline is questionable. Even the defense looks scrambled so far. But, the Cheetahs did manage 9 linebreaks against the Sharks… they have problems as well.

Sharks can never win… even if they miraculously might just do, in a freakish game or two…

Nope, I employ Stormers supporters and “kenners” logic and I come up with the answer…

    The Sharks are farked…

It just beats me how they can be termed favourites – in light of their obvious inferiority according to the Stormers “kenners” on this site…

I mean even as “favourites” they cant win, because as esteemed kenners like yourself intimate, they cant live with the favourites tag, as demonstrated in the CC final last year when they got beaten and “choked” against your B team…

So, its lose lose and this “kenner” is just going with the flow and enjoying it…

Sharks will lose because they either got beaten by the better team, or they choked with the favourites tag…

And of course Keo has put the mockers on them with his prediction…

The Sharkshit mercenaries got no chance in Dirtbin… They only turning up for the paycheck in front of a half full Stadium with the worst crowd support in the country according to the objective commentary on this “esteemed” Rugby site.

Because the card scenario is a very real possibility.

Fark me, Peyper nearly blew the Bulls off the park last weekend, and if it wasn’t for Jantjies meltdown or JDV’s bad decision making at penalty time, it could have been a much closer game than the one sided scoreline that resulted…

The game poses a difficult decision on whom to take my wager, Kaplan’s in control meaning we won’t see the farce of Peyeper from last week when 2 ilegal tries by the quotas were allowed, the Stormers will have to out play the Sharks if
they are to cause an upset.
And that won’t be easy for the Stormers more so with Kolisie , Jantjies, Aplon and Habana in their line up ;)

  • 92.Heavens Game: Reply to this comment

    @Heavens Game-80: Oh fark… Kaplan is ref.

Sharks are screwed on the reffing front…

Any faint chance of scrum advantage gone in a referee adjudged instant… Kaplan not keen the scrummage as a contest…

Stormers defence will camp offsides and get away with it – Kaplan not too aware of rush defence as the Aussies will attest in their many complaints against him…

    So Sharks are truly farked…

They are seen as “favourites” by the kenners – therefore will choke…

They have a “shi.t” Captain according to the “kenners”, therefore will fall apart…

The ref aint gonna do them any favours…

And of course their loosies got fckedup by the Cheetahs loosies, without Brussouw, just last week… What hope do they have against the Stormers giants…

Stormers have a clear path here obviously…

blank advertising boards @ the Tank?

    Sharks, WP shocked at stand-off
    PUBLISHED: WEDNESDAY, 27. FEBRUARY,
    2013 IN CATEGORY SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

The Sharks and Western Province have
expressed shock after being dragged into
a stand-off between Kagiso Vantage and
    the South African Rugby Union.

Kagiso Vantage, the sports sponsorship and
advertising contracts arm of Kagiso Media,

on Wednesday issued a statement in which
they said they will not sell any advertising
space to SARU during the 2013 Super Rugby
competition, at Kings Park in Durban, and
    Newlands in Cape Town.

The Sharks (Pty) Ltd and Western Province
Rugby moved quickly to distance themselves
    from the Kagiso stance.

“We dissociate ourselves from this [Kagiso
Vantage] press release,” the Sharks and WP
    said in a joint statement.

“Neither party gave approval and are
shocked at this course of action and will be
communicating with Kagiso Vantage in due
    course.”

According to Kagiso Vantage, who advised
SARU that it will not sell any advertising
space to SARU at the Durban and Cape
Town rugby stadiums, the issue arose from
matches played at Newlands and Kings Park
    in 2012.

Kagiso Vantage holds all advertising rights
to rugby matches at Newlands. In addition,
the company is the exclusive agent of the
Sharks (Pty) Ltd for the purpose of selling
advertising space on the digital perimeter
    board in Kings Park.

According to the company the action by the
Kagiso Group subsidiary follows the issuing
of a summons against SARU for payment of
invoices relating to the sale of advertising
space at Kings Park and Newlands during
    rugby matches played in 2012.

Costa Constantinou, CEO of Kagiso Vantage,
    noted: “Kagiso Vantage sells advertising
space to SARU at Newlands and Kings Park
that is then utilised by SARU sponsors to
display branding, trade names and product
    advertising.

“Invoices submitted to SARU for payment
for this space relating to games played in
2012 have still not been paid. Until these
    outstanding invoices are settled and
    additional outstanding matters resolved,
Kagiso Vantage will not sell any more
advertising space at these venues to SARU.

“We have obtained legal advice from Jeremy
Gauntlett on the matter and are determined
to maintain the ban on advertising space
sales to this organisation until the matter is
    settled to our satisfaction.”

    SARU sponsors have accordingly been
informed that until the dispute is resolved
their branding, trade names and product
information will not be advertised within
    Newlands during Super Rugby matches.

In addition, their advertising will not be
displayed on the digital perimeter board in
    Kings Park during SARU matches.

Constantinou added: “It is regrettable that
this action has to be taken and that SARU
sponsors are affected in this way. However,
we have shown great patience in our
dealings with SARU, but to no avail. Our
    2012 invoices remain unpaid.

“Hopefully, common sense will prevail and
SARU will now take action to ensure
    payment is finally made.”

    * We are awaiting reaction from SARU.

the main reason for this is we’re having to go through multiple pages to see team sheets for the fantasy rugby picks, one ends up going to the super sport website and i think that defeats the purpose.

By all accounts Stormers played kak last week. They were dominated up front but despite that:
    * they outscored the Bulls 2 tries to 1;
    * left at least 15 points on the park through Jantjies’ kak kicking;
    * only lost by 8 points becaus of an illegal try awarderd to the Bulls.

Now taking into account the above awa the fact that the Bulls played very well according to reports from all, I feel that the Stormers have a very good chance of causing an upset on Saturday. In fact, I have them as winners by 4 points.

The Sharks, because of their homeground and them being SA’s best bet in the S15, will be overwhelming favorites but they’ll have to play very well if they want to win. I don’t know if they will be up to it. They’ll probably start like a house on fire and then fizzle out towards the end when Deysel, Kanko and Jannie show us their disappearing act in front of a few thousand people.

    Final score: 19 – 15.

    GO STORMERSSSSSS.

The partnership of JdJ and Fourie for the Stormers in 2010 was very fruitful. JdV came back in 2011 and phew, the Stormers backline play went downhill. Frankly the Stormers’ backline play has looked better whenever JdV hasn’t played in the last two years.

  • 189.Provvas: Reply to this comment

Keo: The Sharks will win for not ONE reason you stated in your article!

The harks will win becasue of the out of date gameplan that Allister cannot let go in 2013! If you look at last years type of play from the Stormers, nothing changed at Loftus. Only the things they were doing good in the mentioned gameplan, was better executed last year ie: Gang tackling the ball carrier back with 2-3 yards everytime. This did not happen at Loftus.. Sustained pressure for pahse after phase on defense… always pressuring the other team to make mistakes.. this time round the Bulls got the upperhand.

So no the Sharks will win because they have the better Coaching staff having new ideas and having the correct type of gameplan.. Not all is sacrificed for just forward play nor is only an all out attack. The last 3 years showed that teams that played a more balanced gameplan were the victors.. The stormers did well to win games they should have lost… that will not happen again this year

So no, I hate to think what a Jake White/ Plumtree type of coach could do with the talent in the cape…

One of the reasons teams do this is to play as close as possible to the blindside, and try to suck in the opposition blindside winger into the ruck.

Makes sense if you have wingers like Habana and Aplon waiting to capitalise on that.

But I do agree, the Stormers do it far too often.

If I can give you some advice: Go to the “How to play” bar 1st and print it out. It will give you all the rules wrt scoring points, substitutes, transfers etc. It will give you a better indication of how to select your team.

    Potgieter stays true to the
    Blue
    PUBLISHED: WEDNESDAY, 27. FEBRUARY,
    2013 IN CATEGORY SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

    Springbok and Bulls loose forward
    Jacques Potgieter has extended his
contract with the Blue Bulls Company
    (Pty) Ltd.

The Bulls confirmed on Wednesday that the
robust flank, who joined the Bulls in 2011
from the EP Kings and immediately made an
impact, will stay on till 2015.

Potgieter produced fine form in the 2012
Super Rugby season, in which he made his
Bulls debut, which saw him being picked to
play for the Springboks in 2012, earning
    three caps.

Commenting on the extension of his
contract, Potgieter said the Bulls style of
    play benefits his game.

“I am very happy in Pretoria and have
progressed so much as a player since my
    arrival here,” Potgieter said.

“I would like to stay on and develop my
    game even further.

“The great work ethic makes it easy to
operate here if you believe in working
    hard.”

    BBC High Performance Manager Xander
Janse van Rensburg was very pleased with
    this development.

“Jacques has shown himself as one of the
    most committed and versatile loose
forwards in the country over the last couple
of seasons,” Janse van Rensburg said.

“His abrasiveness fits well with our style of
play and to have him around till at least
the end of November 2015 is a real bonus
    for us.”

For the sheepshaggers, I reckon the Canes

For the SA conference, without doubt the

Funnily enough I dont reckon they will win
the “conference”, not that they have to… As

    by Gavin Rich 28 February 2013, 11:59

Unless he’s delusional, DHL Stormers coach Allister Coetzee must have been doing some biting of his tongue when he told a Cape Town media conference this week that the results at this time of the year are irrelevant and there is no pressure on his team.

While it is true that the Sharks recovered last year from a poor start to play in the final, and the Stormers themselves very nearly did it back in Rassie Erasmus’s first year in charge in 2008, when they lost their first three matches and then were one bonus point short at the end of the league phase, having a record of played two lost two is not something Coetzee will want.

Such a start to the season, with the champion Chiefs coming to Newlands the following week with a point to prove, would place the Stormers under massive pressure. And while the Sharks did recover from a slow start last season to play in the final, you just have to speak to the Sharks coaches about what they went through to get there.

They were on a final footing from about Easter, with every game being a must-win, and even then they could only finish in a position that forced them to fly to Brisbane for a quarterfinal.

The Stormers do have an easier run in during the second half of the competition, and they do have enough depth now to sustain injuries and still be a strong unit when that stage arrives. But chasing the game in the SA conference battle and on the overall log table is not something that the Stormers are used to doing, at least not the current crop under the coaching of Coetzee.

We can only guess at how they will respond to the sort of pressure that for the Sharks has become almost second nature given the habit they have made over the past three seasons of starting the season like they spent the summer scoffing sleeping pills. The Cape media is not exactly renowned for sense of perspective, and Coetzee must know that is as big a reason as any to avoid falling into a hole that might just be made out to be a crater in the city that he lives.

You just had to be at the press conference at Loftus following last week’s game to establish that Coetzee and skipper Jean de Villiers didn’t take the defeat to the Bulls well, and the Sharks should be warned that when they spoke about doing a lot of hard, honest talking and putting in a big effort on the training field during the week they would have meant it.

For his part, Sharks coach John Plumtree is under no illusions that the Stormers will be better this week than they were in Pretoria. That being so, his own men might have to be improved on their effort in Bloemfontein if they hope to avenge last year’s Currie Cup final defeat. But last week it was the Bulls who were under more pressure as they were playing at home, this week it’s the Stormers who face the pressure after already dropping one game.

One thing that Coetzee is right about when he talks about less pressure early in the season is that the teams tend not to be as consistent and get the momentum they do later in the competition, and it is difficult to really talk about form and make predictions based on that. It will take a couple of weeks for the pattern of the competition to establish itself.

However, the two teams that can be said to be in form at the moment based on more than one match are the Brumbies and the Bulls, with the latter having shown the same form last week against the Stormers that they did during an impressive pre-season.

Apart from the game in Durban, the interest this week should focus on the Crusaders’ entry into the competition. They play the Blues in Auckland first up and that’s going to be a tough ask for them given how the Blues played last week in Wellington.

    WEEKEND PREVIEWS AND PREDICTIONS

    FRIDAY

    Blues v Crusaders, Auckland 8:35am

The Crusaders should be pleased they’re not making their entry into the competition after a bye in the opening week against an Australian team as that would mean they would be playing a team that’s already played twice. But the Blues were sharp in their first game last week and the Crusaders are up against it. The Todd Blackadder era has not been convincing and there are a lot of questions that have to be asked about where they are going as a franchise, but on paper the Crusaders look strong, and to my mind they are always less beatable when they have John Plumtree lookalike Kieran Read at the helm.

Prediction: Crusaders by less than 5.

    Waratahs v Rebels, Sydney 10:20am

The Waratahs have a lot of people expecting big things of them but they started on a false note last week in Brisbane. It was their first game though and the Reds were playing their second, so this match will tell us more about the Waratahs’ potential. They should win convincingly.

Prediction: Waratahs by 7 to 15.

    Reds v Hurricanes, Brisbane 12:20pm

The Hurricanes enjoyed an unexpected resurgence last year but were disappointing in losing their first match to the Blues – at home too. They have Conrad Smith back as captain this week and that will make a big difference, but I’m expecting the Reds to re-establish Brisbane as a fortress this season so they start with a slight edge.

Prediction: Reds by less than 7.

    SATURDAY

    Chiefs v Cheetahs, Hamilton 8:35am

Sarel Pretorius is back for the Cheetahs and they played some inspiring rugby in New Zealand last year. But the Chiefs were awesome last week and the Cheetahs have just done one of those long flights across the time-zones, so any optimism of an upset is wishful thinking.

    Prediction: Chiefs by 15+

Vodacom Bulls v Western Force, Loftus 5:05pm

Frans Ludeke spoke about his team’s first “international opposition” after last week’s game as if the Western Force were something to fear. In truth the only people who should be fearing anything on Saturday is the Australians, for it would be the shock of the century if they won at Loftus, where the Bulls were very impressive against the Stormers. The Bulls have lost players to injury but they should win comfortably, with even my prediction being perhaps a bit conservative.

    Prediction: Bulls by 18+

Sharks v DHL Stormers, Kings Park 7:10pm

Was last week the wake-up call the Stormers needed? If it was, and they have now finally shaken off any complacency derived from last year’s Currie Cup success, they could well win Saturday’s big derby at Kings Park. They have the pack, it’s just going to have get into the game earlier and execute better than was the case at Loftus. But the Sharks have a strong pack too and I like the look of it when Jean Deysel is on the flank. Frans Steyn has also been added to the mix at the back since the Currie Cup season so there isn’t any noticeable superiority for the Stormers backs this time, and my money says that if the Sharks play to their potential they’ll win.

Prediction: Sharks to win by 1 to 7.

I think the point that Allister was making was that if you play the game for 80 minutes thinking about the result all the time then you are going about it the wrong way.

If you focus on getting the stuff right that you practiced in training then you will be in with a shout to win the game. The small things, handling, working together on the set pieces (i.e. jumpers getting the timing right with the supporting players and the throw in etc), that they have the players to win it.

They are very motivated, that I can promise you. There wasn’t a lot of smiling and joking around at the practice, but focus and urgency.

It may also have helped that Heyneke Meyer was there.

Too close to call for me. If the Sharks had looked cohesive against the Cheetahs for the full 80 minutes I would be more confident. They however had a lot of chances against the Cheetahs which they failed to round off and there was also that 15 minute period when the Sharks took a nap.

The Sharks have to round off opportunities and play for 80 minutes if they are going to win this. The two parts of their game that could be rated as poor from last weekend.

Elton Jantjes had a nightmare last weekend but we all know we can expect more than that from him. If he comes right in this game, I think the Sharks might have a long day at the office.

I would say this might come down to whichever team makes the least mistakes. Discipline will be very important.

Instead of spraying ‘jou pis’ like a .itch on heat and displaying your groupie ‘jagsheid’ to all the globe via the internet, why not address your seriously lacking rugby credibility?

Tell us groupie, what are ” … all the right reasons” you, as a ‘lightie’ growing up in your parentally desired racist environment, supported just racist sports(rugby, cricket) played at racist venues until the present? Have you ever been to Langa Stadium, Vygiekraal, City Park, Green Point Track(not Stadium), Florida Park, UWC, Dan Qeqe Stadium, Adcock Stadium and more where those sports were played too by the fathers of Kleinveld, Carr, De Jong, Philander, Kolisi, Bobo, Duminy, Barnes, Domingo, Peterson( X 3) and millions more?
If not, why not? Is it because of your closeted racist heritage?

Tell us too what are “… all the wrong reasons” that you know just ‘fokkol’ about Kwaru(clubs like Union, St.Cyprians, Spring Rose R.Cs etc.), E.P.R.U( St.Marks, Swans, Wallabies R.Cs etc – A..C’s. home union), Sedru, Tygerberg R.U., W.P. R. Board, City & Suburban R.U., W.P. Country Distr. and a host more?

What do you really know about Gavin, Ronnie ,Valence and Dan Watson(and teammates Peter.Mkata, Temba Ludwaba, Norman Xhoxho, Yeye, Speelman and more)?. If not, why not? Is it that protective, beneficial ‘apartheid’ ivory tower existence that rounded you with a questionable credibility, so well?

What about Jabaar, Fredricks, Majiets(X4), Lefty Adams, Tiffie Barnes, Yacoob Omar, Hardie Dollie and tons more? Have you or you folks seen them play sport? If not why not? I have seen countless of your racists from before and after Dawie Snyman and Hansie Cronje and others. It was shoved down our gullets by radio and tv day after day.

    Hello darkness my old friend.
I come to talk with again.
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools,” said I, “you do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

What respect is their for and from most here when some stupidly make rugby jokes such as ” It’s going to be a rugbyMarikana for my Stormers ” as seen in post 65 on this thread and all who read it were absolutely silent? Not a murmur raised about said person’s moral standards.

Where is the connection between 47 mineworker deaths just striking to improve their slave wage lot? Where is and was the sensitivity then and even now or am I to believe no one read that?
Why not insensitively also simply invoke those other political tragedies of Sharpeville and Soweto(June 16th) to make a non-existent childish point.?

Where and what are the moral values mainly of the perpetrator group when ‘esteemed’ globally acclaimed sports persons just just grab a gun and pump 4 bullets into someone, anyone?

South Africans, especially those who benefited from ‘apartheid’, are in sore need of new moral standards and yet 20 years post its seeming ‘end’(don’t believe this) it is still the same business as usual.

If these two women cannot respect themselves then who is anyone to deem it necessary to respect such vulgar, obscene specimens?
Check on the Kings game thread who it dawned upon to refer to the haters with that ugly sexual N-word. in plural form, that ends with ‘.ers’ as in “n***ers. And don’t stop there on your daily excursions through these pages Were either or both of you not disgusted by that ? Where does your objection appear?

Who is daily more vulgar than ‘doggy poo’ with obscene words(like ******* and more ) liberally inserted in those sentences without spaces? Why do you think she does that except to hide such vulgarity? She has even admitted to such on a rare occasion or two. Have I heard either of you even peep like a sick chicken about that?

From the very outset I said she was a barely touched up version of that vulgar “Helen” who constantly stuffed various loaves of french bread and more up or into every conceivable blood oozing human ******* and more. Did either or both of you become selectively moralistic about that? Where and when?

Get out of you ouma’s world and show me where lions, rats, cats, dogs, hogs, horses, mules(like you) , ostriches or more treat there gender opposites any differently or more respectfully?

Women in my living proximity DO NOT conduct themselves with such vulgarity and obscenity or go about trying to be ‘smartarsed’ as they go about looking deliberately for trouble. Accordingly they elicit the respect in which they conduct themselves – like for like.
In science there are many rules but there are always exceptions to the rules and those too have to be taken cognisance of and applied in a given situation.

So ‘gatgabba boytjies’ get off your high horse and apply your brush evenly and in a balanced manner if you want to be sanctimoniously accepted as you pontificate from your podiums.

Are you trying to convince yourselves, and no one else, that vulgarity from all disturbs you more than the insensitive, sick linking of a potential losing rugby game to the 47 deaths of mine workers doing so to earn a living wage as opposed to their slave wages? ” … rugbyMaikana of my Stormers ”

How sure are you that you are not in need of a more balanced and higher moral standard as you bumble your way through life thinking you are so holier than most if not all?

If people cannot respect themselves, any gender, then why should I respect them as they go about searching high and low for disrespect as they address themselves for my attention for that?

You have earned a failing grade for the attempt at sanctimonious morality.

As for other presumptuous references I have not touched on, it is just more emotional garbage. Like everything else in those posts, save it for any of your brats that care to want to hear it all.

    ET., with respect:

One can be critical of others without having to resort to obscenities.

Also, there are things men just don’t do:
METAPHORICALLY speaking, if a woman (or a child, or a frail elderly person) slaps a man, one would not expect such man to punch, head butt, & kick such woman (or child or elderly person), AND to claim that such action is somehow justified. Any perceived infringement of the man’s persona (physical, or as in this case, by way written word) must be commensurate with the threat or hurt sought to be countered, bearing in mind the relative circumstances of the parties involved.

And turning to you specifically, you mostly seem to find it impossible to post anything that is not dripping with anger & vengeance. I find it a real pity, because you make many valid points & present much food for thought, but unfortunately your contributions are predominantly worthless (at this forum) for the simple reason that your style & manners are such that most readers are not at all receptive to your message. Tis a real pity; it is so counter productive; it is such a waste of time & effort. You mostly achieve exactly the opposite of what you set out to do, yet somehow you cannot see it.

@BULLET-698: First game dude. Lions have also topped the Super rugby log after week 1 before. No need to get erect about it. Sanity will be restored over the next couple of weeks.

The Kings will retain a good log position after this weeks free 4 points as a result of the rest week.

Unfortunately for them, having a rest week so early in the competition is the absolute kiss of death. So they must enjoy their 8 log points for now. I think the fantasy is about to end.

You want to talk “derogatory” , do you remember your “coloured lady”(she does not ever qualify) that you have never set eyes on even in the Boardwalk?

Are you sure you understand the term “justifying”, for 562 really highlighted , with examples given , your lack of credibility with your self-imposed rules for men and no rules for the opposite gender.

How aptly and miraculously correctly you describe yourself in post 594 with your words ” nobody is honest in SA anymore”.

Did that old UPE degree that any Afrikaner was entitled to on registration not prepare you to separate fact from fiction and thus not leave so confused as you now are?

” METAPHORICALLY ” violence (then, in a word and cutting the rest of that paragraph) :

Explain please how that enters the equation then in the cyber world where physical socialising is not possible?
What is the set purpose of that wasted paragraph?

In short , it is plain rubbish, not so?

” Also, there are things men just don’t do:” says who and to whom?

Did some god-like apparition suddenly appear before you one day and wrote those rules on your pale Afrikaner backside(is that obscene or is arse a better fit?). And since it filled that arse-space, no similar rules were given or written for the opposite gender?
Man you are some extreme work of a creator.

As for that 2nd or last paragraph, you can save your patronising, condescending and paternalistic attitude and advice for those whose sick, vulgar deeds you cover-up and protect by sparing your brush from making even sweeps on the canvas of life.

Why do you evade the truth and especially the cavalier use, insensitively so of the 47 mineworkers killed at Marikana in a pathologic rugby joke?

thing is, as ET has so rightly pointed out (and I dont condone his comments to the ladies either), there is very much a huge hypocritical divergence on this blog..

When some Saffas mention crime stories about NZ, wife beating etc hardly any other Saffas will speak up and deride the commentor, yet when I post similar or relevant crime stories, for e.g domestic violence in SA, I am seen as scum and filth..

this really is an indictment on your society as a whole, willing to mock others for their social ills but then get quite perturbed when someone from that other country points out your own failings..

use it or dont, I dont really care Lazarus..

as Ive said often, I’ll gladly have a beer with anyone on this blog if they happen to be in Sydney.. hell, I’ll even shout the first 5 rounds..

    forgot to add Fern

you should make a joke about my dead mother in response to this post..

it is after all yours, HGs and whatevers “fall back” to any point or post I make..

hell, HG was making jokes about it 3 weeks after the event, even after I asked him to desist… he thought it was hilarious, much like you and whatever do too..

but all it does is show how little respect you have for human life

please let me know when you lose a loved one within three weeks of their passing, and we’ll see how you like jokes about it all..

@the curse-730: You should not judge him too harsly, being a loudmouth shark supporter living in pretoria who hates afrikaners and with his personality. It cant be easy. He might be physically abused on a regulas basis. That might explain the hate and desire to hurt. He is the proudest “damduiker ” I know.

Keo.co.za has always promoted uncensored views, but has never tolerated racist or crass outbursts. Come on guys and girls. If you can't moderate yourselves or each other then I am going to be forced to regulate the posts and enforce a registration process for comments. The choice is yours.

Have your say
