Canes run Reds close

Liam Gill guided the Reds to a first victory over the Hurricanes in six years.

The Reds beat the Hurricanes 18 – 12 after leading 11 – 9 at half time.

The match started evenly with penalties being exchanged, before Digby Ioane scored his first try at the Suncorp Stadium in more than 600 days. Rob Simmons, playing in his 50th match, scored on the other side of half time to stretch the Reds’ lead to 9 points.

Beauden Barrett scored the Canes points with four penalties but he missed with three as well.

The Reds’ loose trio lookes the most balanced in the competition, with Liam Gill again impressive.

The Hurricanes finished the stronger and Julian Savea and Conrad Smith combined to come close to scoring in the final minute.

The Canes also had a try denied by the TMO, who ruled a knock on two phases back.

Smith clashed several times with referee Steve Walsh and afterwards described the match as one of the strangest he had played. He said he did not understand a lot of the referee interpretations but did not blame that for the defeat.

He felt the Canes would score and the points would come and was as frustrated in the inability to convert chances into points, as he was with Walsh’s officiating.

Reds captain James Slipper credited the spirit within the squad for the courageous defence to deny the Canes in the final five minutes.

The Criminals are very good at dragging the opposition down to their level. The Leads are criminals! QED This game may be ordinary, particularly as the ref is a schooner short of a keg. The easiest way to beat the Oz is to send them a few kegs at half-time.

  • 15.AiDoc: Reply to this comment

The ref just counted up to one and lost his count!

Sheeez, if the Canes win here, I will be 3/3 :)

Comparing that with last week’s ‘stumbling’…….. not that shabby.

Butmightymoses, aren’t the Blues just shining bright.

The Oz franchises and the Wobblies should be re-branded as mi hou tao (Kiwi Fruits), but not necessarily ***

@nama1-5:.Come on Reds, I had an atrocious start to this week’s superbru. No improvement whatsoever on last week’s disastrous picks. I must seriously learn to respect the home teams. Hopefully I will make up ground with a Stormers win later on.

Is it true that all the Kiwis playing in Oz are not mercenaries but merely playing for the money? The Wannabies get paid twice what All Blacks get paid.

Bit of a boring business this isn’t it. Almost as boring as the famous north vs southrrugby derby witnessed in Jacaranda stadium last weekend.

Seems like the 5seconds rule @ ruck time does not apply in australia.

And the Coastal arm wrestle to be played tomorrow.
SANZAR should have the Aus and SA sides play the Thursday and only after that the NZ sides.
Keep the best for last I say.

All Aussie players salaries are regulated by a salary cap. Total team has to fit under 4.2 million.
