Lambie kicks Sharks to victory

The Sharks proved the more physical to edge the Stormers at Kings Park.
The hosts beat the Stormers 12 – 6 after the match was scoreless at half time.
The match was hyped to be great viewing pleasure, but what followed was a disappointing show of what South African rugby has become. Four penalties beat two penalties as neither team looked close to getting over the tryline.
The first half was an error strewn kicking match in which both flyhalves attempted to gain the upper hand with clever kicks into space, but neither succeeded in putting their flyers away. Gio Aplon had the best opportunity of the half, but coughed up a cross kick, that could have been a five pointer had he held on.
After no points in the opening fourty, the second half got off to a flying start as Lambie and Pietersen exchanged penalties in first five minutes after the break. Another penalty each kept the game even, before the Stormers conceded another two for Lambie to extend the lead to six.
All the cliché’s will be thrown around this week, ‘battle of attrition’ and ‘clash of the titans’, and yes it was, but the distinct lack of try scoring opportunities and creativity from both sides will be worrying.
Man of the match Jean Deysel was immense for the Sharks, pilfering numerous balls at the breakdown and being a strong runner in the loose. The Sharks loose forwards will be happy to have matched the Stormers’ trio, both physically and with some good runs.
The Stormers battled at the lineouts, the set piece they were expected to dominate, and with the Sharks having the upper hand at scrum time, the home side got the better of the set pieces.
Many will feel a draw would have been the fairest result as neither team really deserved to win the match more than the other.
Conditions were difficult because of humidity but more was rightfully expected of the match because of the class of player on both sides.

Front row needs to improve. De Allende is looking out of his depth. Jantjies is showing some good touches, mixed with bad – it is as if he thinks he needs to take ALL the responsibility on his shoulders (ala like with the Lions). He needs to be eased into the Stormers winning way of doing things.

There is a serious attacking deficiencies in both teams.
Lambies as expected does not attack the midget back three of the Stormers and doesn’t take advantage of Habana and the other midget being constantly ahead of their defensive positions, we apparently expected too much rom him!

Our support play has been dreadful, we don’t seem to have any intent, another game where it appears as if we just going through the motions. Sometimes we look fab and other times zombies, not taking the game to the opposition just pingpong kicking, not enjoyable to watch.

only place Sharks got the overhand was at scrum time with Beast and Jannie either shoving up or shoving down and dragging our young props to the ground for Kaplan to give them the whistle nearly every time.
In the backline was even stevens with Jordaan and JPP and Mvovo providing a little spark now and again but Stormers had them covered…
Every one blaming JdV got no clue.. JdV is fine at 13 we need a play maker at 12 and at 10..
If Stormers had started with either of Duvenhage Grant or Schreuder at 10 instead of deer in the headlights Jantjies would have been a different game and I reckon we’d have scored a try before half time.

In a crunch game of physical and no quarter asked or given showdown like happened here where first half ZERO points were scored by either team.. then you CANNOT afford to carry ANY weakness in your side.. and Jantjies is the weak link in the Stormers chain and will continue to be that weak link till they realize they cannot risk playing with a weak link any longer.

Pietersen like Aplon and De Allende all made some stupid mistakes occasionally taking poor options into traffic where spreading it would have been a better option..
But comparing those few in the moment poor decisions to Jantjies absolute lack of any ball sense or space awareness or kicking ability or play making ability where he at one point has a 3 man overlap on the outside and decides to kick it up field for Sharks to counter and win a penalty at the very next scrum from exactly where he kicked it….
Jantjies lost us the game tonight like he lost it last week…. and if anyone is unable to recognize where Stormers game absolutely falls apart at pivot first and foremost then they cannot recognize what the crux of the entire problem actually is.

Let’s be honest though. Both teams were poor. The Sharks were very poor. Too many handling errors in the 1st half, not enough oomph and direction. @Tuna-320: Yes its Jantjies.. did you NOT watch the game tonight.. when Peter Grant came on we were 12-6 down and he had to try force the game.. fact is Grant at least made some bust through the advantage line just the same way Frans Steyn did without achieving much as a direct consequence which was as a result of the tenacious defense on both sides..
First half Jantjies was NOWHERE EVER.. not once did anything he do with ball in hand apart from one little shimmy into the Sharks 22 which gave any go forward contribution.. his kick to touch from a penalty went to Sharks full back.. same as last week vs Bulls.. his defense in the inside channel was poor Steyn ran over him same way Olivier ran over him last week…. and his handling at pivot was very weak and slow poor decisions taken all game long when he was supposed to be the spark in the back line…

Both teams had opportunities that they messed up. Lots of handling errors by a variety of players. You can’t blame Elton Jantjes or Jonathan Kaplan for that.

The Bulls have a very real chance of going 0 from 4 on tour. Before the season started, I picked them to bring home 6 points from tour. To achieve that they need to win 1 game and pick up losing bonuspoints in 2 more.
At this point, such a feat seems to be a tall order.
The Brumbies game is probably the most likely one for a win, but given that its the last game on tour, they are probably going to be buggered by then and play half heartedly just to get back on the plane.
This tour is not going to be enjoyable, I reckon.

A few things were blaringly obvious for the stormers in this match:
1. Aplon, who is amazing in open space and great on the counter is being wasted at wing. Please move him to 15.
2. Joe Pieterson cannot counter attack.
3. De Allende is terrible at inside center. Janjies 10, Grant 12 (and kicking). Possibly Taute to compete for the 13 jersey and Jean back to 12.
For both teams, forwards (esp props) are taking too much first phase ball. Props should never get the ball on attack. We use our wings like props should be used – for defense. When the backline got the ball in both teams, they looked more dangerous.
There is only one SA team that use their backline and can complete a backline move – the Kings. A pity they don’t have the forwards or depth to compete seriously.

Jammer Stormers. So near, yet so far. 200% improvement on last weeks diabolical performance. There is something there…one can smell it even. something just needs to click and we will be away. Two losses away is not the end of the world.
I thought Bekker was majestic. I count at least 4 times where he was helping with defence on the wing. My Stormer player of the match by some distance. Groom was good as well. Jantjies started of very well…pity Aplon could not hold on to that cross kick because in a one on one situation (as would’ve been the case with Ludick then), you would always bet on Aplon.
Joe was not his usual good self. Wonder how much damage the Taute as no. 1 FB did to his confidence. The De Allende experiment at no. 12 has been proven to not be very succesful this year. It worked in the CC final because it was an unknown entity but if we want to play a more expensive game this year, he is definitely not the man to play at inside centre.
Kitshoff and Fourie redeemed themself tonight although the former got some questionable penalties against him. I thought that Jannie was the guilty party from the angle (shown by the TV) that I looked at. Plum must have though the same. If not, why sub one of your main manne at that stage.
SCHREUDER… are you by any chance a freakin Sharkie by hart? In the final in 2010 you vokken kicked the ball away in the 78th minute with Stormers trailing by 6. Tonight you did exactly the vokken same thing.

Stormers cannot crunch it out at a tight phase domination game our tight 5 though better are still not at the level where our 2 props can muscle it with the stronger front rows.
But even so if we go in against Chiefs with a struggling pivot who is so far out of sync with the way the rest of the team plays and hasn’t got the experience or even the ability to play the game or think on his feet at a pace that is required at this level of rugby then Chiefs will have a field day with Stormers at home..
Only hope AC and Fleck have now is ditch their poor decision to buy Jantjies as a very poor exercise in damage control and go for broke with a more fluid and quick thinking better distributing fly half.
Start thinking out the box in other words which is something that this Stormers coaching team are simply and utterly unable to do.. rooted in their staid and fear ridden conservative approach till they sink themselves and the entire team in the process.

Stormers had the better of the loose exchanges and Sharks the better of the tight.. back line was about even in spite of Jantjies non contribution…
It was a titty for tatty equal give and take see saw game and either side could have won had the cards been dealt equally. Sharks were kakking themselves a few times Stormers got right up into their territory every time for Kaplan to bail them out the dwang…

The refs should start opening their eyes.. Both Malherbe and Kitchoff were penalized a few times where the culprits were Beast and Du Plessis pulling them down before the second shove.

Frans Steyn had one bullocking run over Jantjies but then again Meisiekind did exactly the same thing last week. His defence was solid but he was devoid of any attacking flair. Adequate – hardly a match winner. Tim Whitehead offers more. Dunno what the Sharkies think.

Stormers should pick their own youth when they are still young like Steff Du Toit, Pollard, Hougaard, JPP, JL Du Plessis, Willie le Roux, etc. and not give them away to the opposition.. then we don’t need any mercenaries as long as the others don’t steal our players we be fine as rain to take the game to the opposition who can only function with mercenaries and none of their own.

@skopdiekan-401: Actually that is inaccurate. The Stormers BEST chance for a try came early in the game when Jantjes chipped the ball over the top perfectly for Gio Aplon who fluffed it. If he had taken that ball it would have been a try.

If Aplon caught the ball from that cross kick and scored from there, his confidence would’ve grown. It was not long after that that he knocked on the ball and you could see the doubt creeping in. Bekker, walking past him after the knock on, should’ve said something to calm him down. I did not see that he did.
I fear that AC will go with DD (who I don’t want there)and Grant (who I don’t have a problem with) next week.

No, not one. Blues, Chiefs, and Brumbies looked good so far. Hopefully our teams will improve as the comp goes on. On paper, Sharks should be our top team, followed by Stormers. Can’t see Bulls making the play-offs with this tour coming up.

Peter Grant will probably start against the Chiefs and AC will probably revert to the game plan he employed last year. Don’t mind Grant starting but the game plan is what worries me. Does anybody else think Kolisi is holding back? He’s not as committed in the tackle as he normally is. Looks like he’s afraid of getting injured again.

Grant might be plain and no flash straight forward game player but he will spark the back line and take some direction to the opposition.. Grant is 1000 times better than Jantjies both out of hand and at place kicking as well as distributor same as Butch was much better for Lions at 10 than Jantjies was when they both played together.
Jantjies was a desperately poor decision as a purchase and even more so the fact that due to the Jantjies purchase some other promising 10′s have gone elsewhere.

Jantjies is just far too much risk at this level.. I definitely cannot see him ever becoming the pivot Stormers were so expectantly hoping he would be.

Frans Steyn is ok but hardly up there with the top centres of world rugby IMO. I still don’t get his walk on water status. Not a game breaker – at least not currently – seems to have lost his flair or his turn of pace. I need more convincing. His best game for the Boks was the 2007 WC final. He’s invisible against NZ and Aus though.

Bringing Grant at the 69th minute and V.d.Heever at the 79th minute defies my logic.
I am sure it defied AC’s logic too but then he had the decrees from the ancyl: “you play Jantjies, Aplon and Habana or else”
And Kolisi too for that matter, it looked that way, the Stormers had a fair chance to win if they would have brought some rugby players to replace the tokens.

It is amazing how one player that’s fearless and uncompromising can inspire a fight. The bulls had Bakkies and Danie with Victor to bring the Intelligence. That made guys like Spies and others potent as well. I thought the stormers going to be potent this year after the curry cup final. Without Eben to lead the charge it turned out to be just another false dawn.Maybe its a good thing to lose the unbeaten record so soon to free up some more spontaneous style of rugby when you got nothing to lose.

While I think the South African games are more akin to test rugby than almost any other fixture, I still find the lack of innovation disheartening. There’s no desire to test the defense with turnover ball. Everything is so choreographed it’s scary. The gap between the Kiwi and Saffa provincial teams is just getting bigger which is scary really.

as an aside, I can count the amount of rugby games I have missed at Newlands on my 1 hand. But with the exception of the Crusaders game that I have made commitments to, I wont be spending my hard earned money on going to Newlands . The backline play in SA has got so bad and creativity less that the long trek to the ground, finding parking, expensive ticket prices, etc….just to endure skop en jag and bask stampkar is just not worth it anymore.
sadly after 37 years after virtual slave like adulation to the great game, I have to say it has become boring to me.
I hope Sharks , Bulls or Stormers go all the way this year, but will spend my Saturdays watching on my TV……..the rugby is just killing my soul……too boring for words…

Oh boy…the Stormers are in trouble this year ! I certainly cannot see this lot beating the Chiefs next week either. Their halfbacks are hardly provincial standard much less Super 15….Jantjies as the Bok flyhalf ?? Dont make us laugh ! Their front rack got bossed and their lineout has nothing once the hooker cant hit the single jumper they do have. I admire Aplon for his guts but he simply cannot compete with the big boys. The Sharks were hardly awesome but they did what they have to and look to be the only SA franchise with any hope of ongoing success….except for the Kings of course who might take out the Cheetahs …..and the Stormers

I think this is really childish calling Jantjies a mercenary, he was approached by the Stormers, all he wants is to play Super rugby and his team is relegated right now.
He did not decide on the game plan and I as I remember it he is more used to play the Lions more expansive type of rugby.
He did not lose the game for the Stormers by himself, he never was consistently a excellent player, I also think it depends how the game is going with the other players around him that determines how he plays.
There is no reason to turn this young man into a pet hate like seems to happen to certain players each year just because he is not who you want on the team, this is almost like a form of bullying….I fuckinghatebullies that have their own agenda’s.

I don’t know how our scrums can be so bad. They were blown up every time. The handling was school boy stuff and the game was overall very poor. Compare to what is being thrown up by NZ teams it looks bleak for all our teams. Let’s hope they get better fast. Agree with Grant10 SA backline play is poor at the moment. Yesterday the Bulls used their get out of jail card for sure.
Cheetahs were taught a lesson, Bulls almost had pie on their face and Stormers were poor once again.

My Stormers are playing poor rugby at the moment. Our backline play is non existent. I know Elton is perhaps playing under instructions but from time to time if it is “on” to play, a good flyhalf IMO should take it on himself to spread the ball… but we just kicked the ball away just about every opportunity!!
Well done to the Sharks – you deserved the victory !! It’s going to be a tough assignment against the Chiefs. It seems that nortierd’s predictions are turning out to be correct (unfortunately)

@CoachPete-536: Hi there: I attended a coaching clinic at the school where I coach on Friday. It was presented by somebody close to the U/20 Boks. He has been with them for 3 years. We spoke about Serfontein and apparently his dad / parents negotiated a contract with the Bulls to “protect” him initially from too much Super Rugby.
IMO not a bad call by his parents. He turns 20 this year but they want him to be introduced gradually and not thrown in at the deep end immediately.
BTW the amount the Bulls are paying him is obscene !!

I agree with Grant10′s comment above. I am finding myself, after a lifetime of being passionate about the game, having to reconsider the time i devote to it. It’s a slow creeping and painful realisation because looking forward to the week’s games is seared right into the deepest and oldest parts of my brain after a life time of good memories. But what we are seeing lately in South African rugby is beginning to hit lows which i’m finding very hard to support. The disconnect between what is possible and what is being attempted on the field, considering our player resources, is just growing too vast.

In my days with the wet “Super Springbok” ball, we (as hookers) virtually had to push the ball into the lineouts because the ball was so slippery and you couldn’t get any grip! – also no towels available to dry the balls !@Rage-552: Yes Pollard is playing off the bench for Tukkies at the moment. Cook that came on as replacement yesterday still played for Tuks on Monday night. It seems that the contracted Bulls who are still young enough are playing for the Varsity Cup side and will later feature in the Vodacom Cup side.

Both teams were kak and would have lost to any of the kiwi sides and half the Aussie sides with those performances. Stormers have at least played their two toughest away derby games, but have the Chiefs next week. A crucial game at this part of the season for us.

People in here are so quick to blame the Ref, or blame the Players? call them mercenaries etc.
Firstly the match officials made mistakes both ways and had nothing to do with the outcome of the match, 2ndly the Sharks scrum thumped the Stormer scrum, are people trying to blame the Sharks front row so blind and clueless?? Fourie must have popped up about 6 times, Move on with the whole blame game.
Jantjies is being blammed for everything? disgracefull. If i was him i would tell WP to stuff off and go back to his Union, yes even if it means no SR this year,
Facts are this was a extremely close hard fought match with no quarter given or asked, and clearly the comments in here show that most have no clue about humidity and what it does to the conditions of play.
That they play these matches at night makes it even worse as the ball is extremely slippery and hard to control, this is why even when you grip the ball tight and get hit hard in the tackle it pops out.
The truth is both teams played hard defensive rugby, the Sharks knew what the Stormers were going to do, and took risk out of their plans and played the percentages, Stormers played their normal game plan with huge defense, The Sharks simply matched that but with a stronger scrum.

Yeah the difference between the two teams were the scrums. As I said I hate losing to the Sharks but what disappoints me more is the manner in which we’re losing. Its pathetic rugby. I’m not blaming Kaplan but sometimes it seemed that he wasn’t too sure of which prop to penalize. If that is the case, rather have a reset.
I hope Liebenberg gets on the park soon. Without him in the middle of the scrum, the Stormers will always battle. Of course Etzebeth’s loss was huge as well. I spoke to a friend last night who had spoken to a relative of Eben yesterday. He reckons it’s still 6 weeks for him on the sideline.
The problem is, Eben was struggling with that ankle in the warm-up matches. Therefore they should not have risked playing him….this is a concern as well. When he is ready to play again will AC and co play him 80 minutes every game ? I guess they will. They will need to manage him well or else he will become like Bekker in the long run with all the injuries

@CharlesM-568: Thanks Charles, trust me the Stormer scrum was truggling boet, Kaplan was not wrong here, what i noticed the Stormer scrum on some scrums slightly holding back and not going into the hit, this means the Sharks pack to close the gap were nearly falling forward.
Clearly this was a pre planned tactic after the Bulls mauled the Stormer scrum too.
The conditions were KAK plain and simple, trust me most of the Sharks players will tell you they would rather play in RAIN.
Your team played with a lot more heart than was the case against the Bulls, and those thinking the Chiefs are just going to whip them?? me thinks Chiefs will need to up their game, Stormers defense is not rubbish like the Cheetah defense where the gaps are like barn doors.

I hate bringing up refs decision but Kaplan’s scrum calls wasn’t convincing and his communication with the front row was atrocious.
Both teams didn’t show enough patience to break through the oppositions defense and Jantjies….. kicked way to much ball away.
Don’t think the Stormers need to press the panic button yet, cause De Jong, Schalk and Etzebeth will add a new dimension to the team but Fleckie needs to pull finger and let the teams creative attacking juices start following.

The standard of rugby – innovation, creativity, attacking flair – dished up by the SA teams to date, has been appalling!
As a spectator I demand more! Or else I will start doing other things on weekends and just catch the score summaries at the end of the weekend.
As a Sharks supporter, I am grateful for the 8 points from 2 games. Last year, the Sharks obtained the 2nd highest number of bonus points for scoring 4 tries and played some sublime attacking rugby in the last 7 games especially with off loads and direct running and linking play. I am a little disappointed that we appear to have started with safety first rugby, but it was foreseeable given Plum’s comments in the pre-season about the emphasis this year being on a consistent, winning start. I still would have liked to see more against the Cheetahs.
I hope to see the Kings games springboard the Sharks into life. With the Stormers and Bulls’ respective fixture lists, the Sharks have an opportunity to open up a bit of daylight over the coming weeks. Bonus point wins are crucial.

I can pinpoint the exact point where Stormers realised they were going to lose the game:
- The final scrum before half time…
Fark me that was a beautiful sight… I could see the muttering amongst the Sharks forwards, probably fed up with the Kaplan officiating of the rucks where he let Stormers hands in and belly flopping all over the place – a farken mess…
They decided once and for all: Fuckthis…
An early hit, giving up the free kick on purpose to make a point – and what a point was made… They absolutely demolished the “vaunted” Stormers pack… Never ever have I seen such turbo reverse on a rugby field as at that moment… FFS, Doc Jannie managed to make his way all the way to the Stormers tighthead… And give him the bitchslap he deserved… The laaitie had saucers for eyes the rest of the match…
Fark that was the funniest thing I have seen on a rugger pitch for a long time…
From that moment on the Stormers knew beyond doubt that they were fu.cked and were from that moment forward totally dependent on the largesse of the ref to get through the game….
But the Sharks, missing Daniel, Bismarck and Alberts, were too farken good and solid to let the ref give the game to the poorer side on the day….

The tournament is a journey and whilst some of your teams may have scored some tries over each other some still lost and got no points, the sharks however scored none and got 4. Yesterday was a watershed moment for the Sharks… Instead of doing what the Stormers and rugby fans expected of them – all out attack from the most complete side in SA – they made a devastating point to the Stormers and their now tattered ambitions to never mind win the tournament but even top the SA conference….
And the point was this:
- The Sharks can play the Stormers game, should they see fit to do so…
- Not only play the Stormers game of aggressive defence, territory and pounce on opposition mistakes, but play that game better than the Stormers can…
- Dominate the Stormers with their own game plan, with certain enhancements such as a far superior scrum.
The Sharks have demonstrated another weapon in their arsenal – a totally different game strategy, a new string to their bow… If they are able to switch between this strategy and their more familiar attack based one then they WILL win the Super Rugby torunament.
Yesterday’s game was nothing less than a signal to knowledgeable coaches all around Super Rugby and commentators, that the Sharks have intent and ability to go all the way in this tournament…
And the fulcrum of this intent is scrum dominance the likes of which Super Rugby has not seen since the Bulls winning the final against the Chiefs or the last Crusaders Championship win….
The most impressive thing about the last 2 games is that the Sharks are not the complete article yet – they are improving game by game – yet games they would have lost last year due to being undercooked, they are winning this year…
I put this down to both Plums shrewdness and the leadership of Frans Steyn on field – he is a winner, and this filters through to the rest of the team….

Now even as i said earlier that both teams gave their all in a forward battle? for me what was nice to see was the Sharks front row has even gotten better then last year and Burden is now a better Hooker, our Lineouts i thought might still be a problem? but after the past 2 weeks i feel that problem is resolved. Kanko back and VD Merwe soughted that out.
Both teams showed yesterday that their defensive structures are unrivaled. and with better conditions the Sharks will opt to attack more, yesterday was not one of the games that risk could be taken.

Actually the Stormers players yesterday that had parity with their Sharks counterparts were funnily enough the players that most of these dumbfuck Brokeback supporters seem to be slating…
Aplon, Bekker, Groom and Jantjies either shaded or at least matched their opposite numbers…
Its the rest of the Stormers that were beaten either on an individual or team basis…
Jantjies clever kicks over the Sharks defence were dangerous in the first half… It seems that the Sharks adjusted to this in the second half…
Sharks were able to just enough with the lineout by throwing to Beast as a last resort to negate any Stormers dominance… The two area where the Sharks had a decided advantage was at scrum time and in the midfield… Especially with the aggressive daisy cutting defence formation that nearly tore a few breezing brokebacks in two at times…

I saw such claims when I started reading this site so kept an eye on such things.
Cane, you are perpetuating the fallacy and fallen into the trap of believing a lie that has been repeated often enough. If what you claim is true, 66.6% of all keo bloggers would support the Stormers. A quick glance at the Current Poll on the left shows that only 26% of bloggers have voted for the Stormers.
Which can mean only one of two things. Either the number of Stormers fans on keo has been greatly exaggerated by people such as yourself or that the Stormers fans are the most unbiased fans on keo.
Take your pick. You can’t have it both ways.
If the Stormers fans did outnumber all others by 2:1 and were as one-eyed and biased as suggested by the Stormer-haters then every poll would be skewed overwhelmingly towards Stormers results.
Either option makes nonsense of your assertion that all the trouble starts with the Stormers fans. HeavensGate, SharksLover, Dusky, Predawn, Fern and boys hardly ever make a post that doesn’t refer to, knock, slate or insult the Stormers or their fans. Do your homework and read back a few weeks of threads and add up the comments knocking other teams. You may get the education that has eluded you until now.

So your choices are A) either the numbers of Stormers fans are exaggerated or B) the Stormers fans are not the one eyed devious group who would manipulate such polls and cause all the trouble.
At least one of both of those claims has to be false otherwise the evil, manipulative one eyed Stormers fans would use their numbers and devious nature to ensure that every poll reflected a favorable Stormers result.
Spend as much time seeking verifiable facts as you do pursuing fanciful conspiracy theories and you could find yourself heading to Damascus. And before you try to re-fry another red herring, yes i understand these polls are hardly scientific and leave plenty of room for error but they are a more credible indication that a hatefilled opinion. Why do you not counter with more accurate numbers then instead of another conspiracy theory?

You can’t produce numbers of people who ‘only read’ any more than you can guess their affiliations. Logic would suggest the percentages of non posting readers would be similar for every team so your ‘point’ falls flat. As I said to the other poster why don’t you counter with verifiable facts instead of theories and conspiracies. The numbers of the polls may not be the most reliable but they are the only figures readily available. So instead of the bluster and huff you offer go and do your research and come back with verifiable, quotable numbers instead of wishful thinking. As disputable as those numbers may be they trump biased opinion every day of the week. When you come back with verifiable numbers I will respond to you. Until then you’re not worth the time.

Maybe I shouldn’t have ranted, but watching the match I truly felt the Force deserved it, they played above themselves.
Then with 10 to go and 7 behind one could see his influence.
They got pinged every opportunity, got a final warning which led to the truck/ trailer or maul try.
Then after the hooter free kick to Bulls that got them the bonus point.
Maybe I was biased while watching and perhaps he had a good game, but even though I had the Bulls to win by plenty, I thought the Force deserved to win on the day.

you pick the winner of the match and you guess the margin by which they do it, very simple… some guys seem able to pick 7 out of 8 games continuously, and you have to not let the heart over rule the head… hard to do at times.. I imagine those who are right into stats (which imo are often superfluous or not a true indication) would rather play fantasy rugby, as they get to trade and buy players and build a team they themselves would pick

I can pinpoint the exact point where Stormers realised they were going to lose the game:
- The final scrum before half time…
Fark me that was a beautiful sight… I could see the muttering amongst the Sharks forwards, probably fed up with the Kaplan officiating of the rucks where he let Stormers hands in and belly flopping all over the place – a farken mess…
They decided once and for all: Fuckthis…
An early hit, giving up the free kick on purpose to make a point – and what a point was made… They absolutely demolished the “vaunted” Stormers pack… Never ever have I seen such turbo reverse on a rugby field as at that moment… FFS, Doc Jannie managed to make his way all the way to the Stormers tighthead… And give him the bitchslap he deserved… The laaitie had saucers for eyes the rest of the match…
Fark that was the funniest thing I have seen on a rugger pitch for a long time…
From that moment on the Stormers knew beyond doubt that they were fu.cked and were from that moment forward totally dependent on the largesse of the ref to get through the game….
But the Sharks, missing Daniel, Bismarck and Alberts, were too farken good and solid to let the ref give the game to the poorer side on the day….

@nortierd-915: lol! Nice one. Seriously though we got sucked in to the stormers game plan. Too defensively aligned to attack when the opportunity presents itself. Look at the NZ conference they attack but then often get caught out defensively although I think their biggest strength is the ability to offload. We can’t do it because our guys are never in a position to receive the pass because of the defensive mindset. Turn it over on an offload and they will score against you on the other side of the field.

And one specially for Rottie Knotter… My little hairy armpit Emo from Durbanville, before she tars all SA teams with the same dull Stormer brush… and the other Brokebacks who have decided to wake up from their one big collective Wake and realisation that the Conference Title is waving goodbye to the “amazing” Stormers and saying hello either to the Bulls or Sharks, on their way to the playoffs, and Championship for the Sharks…
Yesterday was a watershed moment for the Sharks… Instead of doing what the Stormers and rugby fans expected of them – all out attack from the most complete side in SA – they made a devastating point to the Stormers and their now tattered ambitions to never mind win the tournament but even top the SA conference….
And the point was this:
- The Sharks can play the Stormers game, should they see fit to do so…
- Not only play the Stormers game of aggressive defence, territory and pounce on opposition mistakes, but play that game better than the Stormers can…
- Dominate the Stormers with their own game plan, with certain enhancements such as a far superior scrum.
The Sharks have demonstrated another weapon in their arsenal – a totally different game strategy, a new string to their bow… If they are able to switch between this strategy and their more familiar attack based one then they WILL win the Super Rugby torunament.
Yesterday’s game was nothing less than a signal to knowledgeable coaches all around Super Rugby and commentators (not those fanboys and girls yearning for pretty 15 man basketball without intent ), that the Sharks have intent and ability to go all the way in this tournament…
And the fulcrum of this intent is scrum dominance the likes of which Super Rugby has not seen since the Bulls winning the final against the Chiefs or the last Crusaders Championship win….
The most impressive thing about the last 2 games is that the Sharks are not the complete article yet – they are improving game by game – yet games they would have lost last year due to being undercooked, they are winning this year…
I put this down to both Plums shrewdness and the leadership of Frans Steyn on field – he is a winner, and this filters through to the rest of the team….

The NZ teams play the way everyone wants to see the game played.
It doesn’t always work though, but mostly they make it work.
Their players have better skills and they don’t look to make contact first, unlike our players.

Btw did anyone notice in the Reds / Canes match how much the reds interfered with the canes players at the rucks. They cleaned out then stayed in an offside position and prevented the Canes players from attending the rucks often pulling their jerseys holding them back and lingering there. Prevented many possible turnovers and I am am surprised as a neutral that the ref didn’t see it!

Actually the Stormers players yesterday that had parity with their Sharks counterparts were funnily enough the players that most of these dumbfuck Brokeback supporters seem to be slating…
Aplon, Bekker, Groom and Jantjies either shaded or at least matched their opposite numbers…
Its the rest of the Stormers that were beaten either on an individual or team basis…
Jantjies clever kicks over the Sharks defence were dangerous in the first half… It seems that the Sharks adjusted to this in the second half…
Sharks were able to just enough with the lineout by throwing to Beast as a last resort to negate any Stormers dominance… The two areas where the Sharks had a decided advantage was at scrum time and in the midfield…
Especially with the aggressive daisy cutting defence formation that nearly tore a few breezing brokebacks in two at times…

Because your Stormers are not living up to your rather unreal and unrealistic aspirations does not mean that SA rugby is in the “doldrums”… In fact it is looking rather farken yippiekayyay ominous… Especially from the Sharks and Bulls.
Bulls played probably the sh.ittest rugby they possibly could yesterday – they were struggling to motivate themselves against a decidedly inferior team… As good teams are wont to do against inferior opposition they get sucked down to their level… Yet, they won with 4 tries and a bonus point.
The Sharks showed another string to their bow yesterday… With that performance against a Stormers team who played possibly as well as they could, with the ref on their side, and still prevail with a decidedly self assured arrogance, and the ability to play very different game strategies – the Sharks will fear no team in this tournament… They can beat all comers.
There are 2 or 3 teams that could beat the Sharks as it stands, but those teams would have to be at their very best and at home – Chiefs, Crusaders and Bulls… And all 3 will have to play way beyond themselves to have any hope of beating Sharks at home especially when Bismarck, Keegan Cullen and Alberts return…
The Sharks are only going to get stronger… And this truth will hurt the likes of you Huisgenoot Brokeback supporters more and more during the season…

Norty I agree I reckon the Cheetahs lose by around 20 but your Stormers are in for some more pain, this Chiefs side will run at you for 80 minutes and I doubt your boys will be able to hold them out, Chiefs by at least 20.

Yup, excellent clean penalties… A pity the Sharks couldnt beat the Stormers by one point because one point more than the opposition is all you need to win… Instead the farking showoffs go and double their score

@nortierd-944: salient points Nortie, thought the Cheetahs had the better of the first half against the Chiefs, and should have had more points from both kicks and they dropped passes at crucial times with chances for tries… do agree with the Landers probably getting up..
did the Chiefs and Stormers meet last year? cant remember if they did or not. Home ground and should be a full capacity which should lift the stormers, also the criticism they are sure to face will have them fired up. very tough to call, but gone chiefs only on the form they have shown… will be close imo.

@nortierd-944: All is not lost Nortie… The funny thing is – this eminently unbiased supporter believes that the Stormers will beat the Chiefs this weekend… Albeit by 3-6 points and probably just one try scored to the probable 2 by the Chiefs… Yet next week’s win will no doubt be welcomed…
Just remember that when your team does win – it does not mean they are suddenly the “best team in Super Rugby”… That accolade will go to the Sharks when they lift the trophy aloft at the end of it all… (and by that I do not mean the Conference Title bullshittt either)

This will be the first game the Chiefs play a side NOT willing to play their game.
Stormers might lose, but the Chiefs will find it much harder running through them.

Sure no disrespect to your team but the coaches at the Chiefs have that side absolutely humming and unless you completely shut them down up front which I don’t believe you will containing them late in the second half is going to be a nightmare.

It is a just reward for consistency through 20 odd weeks, although I don’t like the conference system and the 5th and 6 th team getting in by default.
I preferred the Super 12 or even 14 to be honest.

They are playing fantastic rugby, and watching them is a pleasure, but they are a confidence side, and who knows, if they manage to be kept out they might start doubting themselves and their attack?
The Stormers have all to play for this weekend and the Chiefs might target one win for their SA tour.
My head says Chiefs by virtue of current form, but I have a feeling the Stormers will really be up for this one.

The only thing that will count is that trophy for the Sharks… This year is probably their greatest opportunity for a long time…
And so far so good… Like the Saders, the Sharks normally dont have a good start… The best opportunity for teams to beat them is right at the beginning… But not this year it seems… I would love to know when last the Sharks actually won their opening two matches in Super Rugby… A long time back, if ever even?
