Basics cost Blues
All the momentum the Blues got from their start to the season has been lost after their shock defeat to the Bulls on Sunday.
The Bulls overpowered the Blues at the breakdowns, an arm-wrestle of a game that the Blues were never going to win. Once they loosened up though, basic errors cost them and they simply could not get into the match.
John Kirwan accepted responsibility for the inconsistent preparations with mixed training sessions in the week leading up to the match. Kirwan was disappointed that his team did not play the way they trained.
Rutledge switches allegiances
Out of contract hooker Jason Rutledge, has been called up to the injury ravaged Hurricanes squad.
The 35 year old hooker, previously with the Highlanders, has been called up due to injuries to Dane Coles and Matu Matu’u. Both players were injured in the Canes’ win over the Crusaders on Friday.
Coles has an ankle sprain while Matu’u has a shoulder injury.

Pressure is the name of the game.
Basic errors come from pressure.
The Bulls applied the pressure.
The Blues made the basic errors.
The better team won, there should not be any complaints.

Just desserts for the Blues.
How bloody arrogant were we in making all those changes, simply because they had been planned as part of the season strategy.
The Bulls were magnificent, the Blues were somewhere else.

Not doing the basics properly is the cause of most teams falling short.

Totally disagree with this…….. Bulls just klapped them and they underestimated the Bulls, overestimated their own ability to just pitch up and walk away with 4 (or 5) points.
What were they thinking! Hopefully the Crusaders will see this as a shock defeat and upset too….
Actually, Crusaders were so-so until now, even then, the Bulls will into this weekend as slight underdogs still…… just how we laaik it

That was one of the best away performances by the bulls for a long time, the forwards battered the blues and the backs defended well(apart from kircheners stupid tackle on ranger),you cannot tackle a player like ranger like that and expect to stop him,he had to tackle much lower as he could have hurt himself.I dont care what people say about olivier to me he is still a good inside centre and he deos his job in the team, and he always gives 100%,spies played like we know he can play, and is without a doubt the best No8 in sa super rugby. That young prop mellet continues to impress in his 1st season of super rugby, ans he does not give away the amount of penalties greyling does. All in all a very satisfying performance.

Bulls shouldn’t gloat. Blues had an off-day. Bulls had the same experience last year at Loftus. After that the Blues got murdered by all and sundry.

Kirchner is soooo over-rated! At best a club fullback.

@Lang Giel-10:
Kirchner not spectacular, but safe.

Kirwan should take full responsibility.
What was it…. 6 changes to a winning formula/team and expected to win?
We all know Bulls have never won there up to that game…i am hoping Kirwan was not looking at history.

You guys need to get a room. Preferably one with padded walls. Two expats arguing over which is the best country left behind. Don’t that just beat all?
12 Mar 2013, 09:09 am
Kirchner missed a tackle, Ranger at full speed with space to step in or out. almost an impossible task, take him low and momentum would’ve carried him over. It was a great try by Blues, created space and Kirchner ended as scapegoat. agree he is not world class fullback but looking at games last week was the best we had on offer. Joe gifted try to Chiefs with knock on from kick-off, didn’t add too much on attack. Sharks didn’t (couldn’t) use fullback on attack. Zane was involved in two of Bulls tries and got knocked over by world class wing playing some of the best rugby in his career. Not many players in the world would’ve stopped Ranger in that position,
