Chance for the Cheetahs

Chance for the Cheetahs

RICHARD FERGUSON writes that the Cheetahs are in a position to pull off another surprise win in Australasia.

The Cheetahs bossed the Highlanders in Dunedin to get their campaign off the mark, this after a poor start with a loss at home to the Sharks and a hiding at the hands of the Chiefs. Where exactly the motivation came to show such a turnaround nobody will know, the question though is if they will show the same form this weekend.

The Waratahs’ start hasn’t been much better, also boasting one win from three matches, the only difference being the quality of opposition in facing only Australian teams. The other difference has been the quality of rugby being played, the Cheetahs showing moments of brilliance on attack while the Waratahs have shown no potency whatsoever.

What the Cheetahs have, is momentum. And we all know the Cheetahs with the slightest bit of form is a beast of another kind. And with their pivot hitting some form, the team as a whole will be up for this match.

Key to the Cheetahs’ cause is Sarel Pretorius, as we all know, but it is his linking with Johan Goosen that is of the utmost importance. They started together against the Chiefs, and with Sarel’s passing not being up to scratch and Goosen missing kicks, the team as a whole fell apart. The very next match they clicked and the team benefited with front foot ball and the loose forwards were allowed to play. The fact that points were being scored from visiting opposition territory helped.

Lappies Labuschagne shined brightest against the Highlanders as he excelled in all aspects of the game, gaining front foot ball and being an absolute beast on defence. Expect Heinrich Brüssow to start and along with Lappies, gain an upper hand at the breakdown.

The Cheetahs are an up and down team that will surprise, whether good or bad, week in and week out, but I expect them to pull consecutive victories out of the hat and surprise again this weekend.

News this morning indicates that Adriaan Strauss, Johan Goosen and Lappies Labuschange all missed training yesterday, and will only train tomorrow, as today is the off day.

Strauss went off injured (rolled ankle), Goosen is not feeling well and Lappies has a thigh strain.

I don’t think it will be that much of a surprise if the Cheetahs win. With injuries and key players off form the Tahs haven’t really clicked so far. Add to this the fact that 29 of their 35 players will be off contract at the end of the season there is an air of uncertainty in this Tahs team. The Cheetahs must just stay focused

    @Baylion-5:

    Very good points..

It won’t be a surprise if they win, yet nobody will be surprised if they lose either..

Saw the Waratahs team announced, some players coming back from injury and the coah dropping key players ahead of this match.

@Richard Ferguson-6: True, the Cheetahs have been known to turn a win into a loss :)

Sarel will want a big game after sitting on Tahs bench all last season.

Also think Cheetahs need to play Frans Viljoen in the back row.

The better the Cheetahs get the better players they will attract.

With aome positions they need to bring some new players in

15 Need a new signing Daniller cant have many years left now
    14 Le Roux
    13 Sadie
    12 Ebersohn
    11 Rhule
    10 Goosen
    9 Pretorius
    8 Viljoen
    7 Laubuschagne
    6 Brussouw
    5 Van Der Walt
    4 Vermeulen
    3 Coenie Oosthuzyen
    2 Strauss
    1 Nkyane / Caylib Oosthuzyen

Need some good cover on bench and in reserve squad

    Benjamin good
    Piet Van Zyl good

    Depth needed

Maybe Deysel, Danie Poolman, Ashley Johnson, Andries Coetzee / Combrinck and Sias to return in 2 seasons

Same match 22 for the Waratahs match announced:

Cheetahs: 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Willie le Roux, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Robert Ebersohn, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Pieter Labuschagne, 6 Frans Viljoen, 5 Francois Uys, 4 Lodewyk de Jager, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Trevor Nyakane.

Replacements: 16 Ryno Barnes, 17 Coenie Oosthuizen, 18 Rynhard Landman, 19 Heinrich Brüssow, 20 Piet van Zyl, 21 Riaan Smith, 22 Ryno Benjamin.

Yeah, they mentioned earlier the week that Brussow is still being benched. Glad they’re doing this. Give him time – they really messed up forcing Goosen back too soon. Besides, the current back 3 are world class players, with Frans adding the experience.

Only thing (as a Cheetahs fan) is that they tend to lose when everyone expects them to win… and also the other way around. Let’s hope they can break that trend.

Cheetahs have always been inconsistent but this is a great opportunity to record back to back wins on tour for the first time. Got the Force the following week so with a bit of luck maybe 3 from 3. Might be a bit ambitious but we’ll see how it goes.

Last year we had just as good an opportunity but we lost to a last minute penalty against the Brumbies and then drew with the Rebels. That after we beat the Canes and lost by less than 7 to the Crusaders.

  • 13.TooMuchRugby: Reply to this comment

@stormer in a teacup-11: Also, they have Willie Le Roux, who is a more than adequate replacement at fullback.

    @The Rangerman-15:

Definitely didn’t play for the Eagles. He left last year for the Wasps – probably got fed up with Naka keeping him on the bench.

Enjoyed the way he played myself. Made a fantastic super-sub. Did miss a ridiculous amount of tackles though and he struggled to last the 80.

I do remember that the Cheetahs tried to turn him into a hooker for a long time. Didn’t quite work out though

I actually think that Labuagachne should be given a chance with the Springboks this year

Him and Kolisi to come through and get some game time with Schalk and Heinrich coming back too

SA loose forwards in good health

8 Vermeulen, Kankowski, Spies, Watson, Botha

7 Alberts, Labusgachne, Burger, Deysel Both Potgieters and Engelbrecht

6 Brussouw, Louw, Coetzee, Daniel, Steggman

Oh and the player you might have been thinking about in regards to the Eagles is probably Bevin Fortuin.

Went from Springboks to Eagles in the space of no time. Injuries played a part. Thought he was a good player myself.

    @stormer in a tea cup –

Hasnt he been capped by the boks before?

    Was sure he was older

If not then surely deserves a chance at full bacl for boks sometime again he isnt a star attraction but does his job with very little mistakes

Or not. You make it look like we have an endless supply of loose-forwards. We’ve got talent there but a few of those guys mentioned are never going to cut it. Hope Heyneke doesn’t listen and then cheapens the Bok jersey.

6 Heinrich Brussow / Francois Louw (o/s puts me off though)
7 Schalk Burger / Willem Alberts / Arno Botha / Marcell Coetzee / Siya Kolisi / Lappies Labuschagne
8 Duane Vermeulen / Pierre Spies / Ryan Kankowski

  • 25.Rhys7: Reply to this comment

    Personally would like

    6 Louw
    7 Burger
    8 Vermeulen

    19 Alberts
And then either Spies, Kankowski, Kolisi or Labusgachne to cover squad

However most people wont agree with me and I think Heynecke will go

    8 Spies
    7 Burger
    6 Brussouw

    19 Louw
    And Vermeulen as squad cover

  • 29.Puma: Reply to this comment

@YoMama-27: Yes it is a huge pity Cheetahs don’t have the money to keep their players. Would be a brilliant squad that.

Then you have to remember a lot of those players left to other franchises while still teenagers. But you right had they the money they would probably have stayed.

Think you would have to offer many of those names much more than a million to stay.

  • 30.Puma: Reply to this comment

I think Cheetahs could definitely beat the Waratahs. Waratahs looked hopeless against the Brumbies last week. Also think Cheetahs will go on to beat the Force. They very well could pick up 3 wins on the road and hope they do.

The claim that the Cheetahs can’t hold onto players because they don’t have the finance is very legitimate but a lot of the blame falls on us. A good start will be to fill the stadium or at least get more people in there.

If people started picking players who have played for their franchises then the Lions would pick a team that looks something like this:

    1. Heinke vd Merwe/JC Janse van Rensburg
    2. Schalk Brits/Bandise Maku/Callie Visagie

Lappies Labuschagne moving to second row is short sighted, hes got an awesome future as a loosie,Reminds one of a bigger/more robust Gerrie “The Ghost” Brits. Good player. Cheetahs need to get a proper lock,Rudi Mathee at Pumas not a bad player once was at the Sharks rated highly at one stage by Muir.Never understood why Wilhelm Steenkamp went back to play second fiddle AGAIN at Bulls.Would probably be a certainty at Cheetahs and a senior member now.

Cheetahs would do well to lure one of the marais bro’s from the Sharks or better yet PSDT even for 1 campaign

    Mentioned on rugby heaven:

“At half-time during their game against the Chiefs, injured All Blacks midfielder Richard Kahui explained how Chiefs management had spotted that No. 12 Robert Ebersohn and No.13 Johann Sadie – both of who are in Super Rugby’s top 10 for missed tackles – tended to “turn in” and get too square while defending from set-pieces, leaving them vulnerable to well-executed wraparound plays.

It seems like just a detail, but armed with this piece of information, the Chiefs constructed two tries, as No. 10 Aaron Cruden manipulated Sadie like a marionette.”

And now the Waratahs know too…
