THe Hurricanes kept the Highlanders winless in a tight affair in Dunedin
The Hurricanes won 23 – 19 after the Highlanders led 13 – 12 at half time.
The Hurricanes scored three tries to one and looked the more attacking side throughout the match. Their finishing let them down though, as multiple chances were fluffed in the Highlanders 22m.
Conrad Smith got proceedings off to a good start with an early try, but the boot of Colin Slade kept things close. Slade landed 4 penalties and a conversion as the lead swung both ways during the match. Further tries from Ben Franks and TJ Perenara in the second half, kept the scoreboard ticking for the visitors.
To keep matter interesting, Hosea Gear crossed the line for a well worked try in the first half, ensuring the home side had the lead at half time. Gear showed great form with brilliant runs with ball in hand, always beating a defender and gaining valuable meters.
The Hurricanes will be relieved to have come from the match with a win as they were on the wrong side of the possession stats, even though they spent a lot of time in the opposition 22m. Their finishing will be of concern, but is something that can be worked on, while they dominated in the set pieces.
The Highlanders remain winless this season, but will take heart from the performance, specifically Gear’s form and the return to full fitness of Colin Slade, who played a stellar match. The Highlanders prepare to face the Chiefs for the second time in a month, while the Hurricanes enjoy a bye next weekend.

Andries Bekker, the most-capped DHL Stormers player in the history of Super Rugby, will move to Japanese club Kobelco Steelers at the conclusion of the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby season.
The 2,08m-tall lock, who has 29 Test caps for the Springboks, aims to prolong his professional rugby career with the move to Japan.
“I’d like to thank everyone at Western Province for their incredible support over the years,” said Bekker. “It will be a sad time when I do leave Cape Town, but my wife, Elaine, and I are excited about the adventures that lie ahead in Japan.”
…
The 29-year-old will finish his 2013 commitments with the DHL Stormers before departing for Japan, which means that he will be available for the knockout stages of the Super Rugby tournament, but this move does mean that his Springbok career will be on hold for now.

Saffa teams can learn a lot from NZ teams.
The weaker NZ team always lose so that the stronger team has a better chance of playing in the playoffs.
Which is why they win so many titles.

I had this match as a coin toss.
15 Mar 2013, 10:27 am
@willievz-70: @BrumbiesBoy-76: I can understand your frustration after usual bonus point donors Leeus are gone and Kings are not delivering as expected.
Brumbiesboy, the key words are “Literally impossible to prove”, one Bakkies is enough here, don’t you think?
15 Mar 2013, 10:29 am
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-77: Bakkies what do you know, you do not watch Keewees derbies, remember?
15 Mar 2013, 10:32 am
Can’t believe Andries Bekker. a great player , but sad that he never fulfilled his potential at international level. I thought that would drive him on , to at least have one solid season for the Boks.
On a positive note would love to see Elstadt and Etzebeth in the second row.
15 Mar 2013, 10:34 am
@Atlas-74: Say it like it is
The bottom 10%……. Only takes one good weekend to be right back in it. (In the pool I’m playing in…) But for now, it makes for dreadful reading
@grant10-78: Roux and Etsebeth my 1st choice WP and Bok lock pairing (for the future) if Quinn hadn’t buggeredoff. Etsebeth IMHO really should be playing at 5. (Very few agree I think…)
But the bleeding is going to continue…. and Heyneke Meyer is going to have to call it a day on overseas selections….. although he has already set the precedent.
We have to realise that financially we are NEVER going to be able to meet the French, **** etc in terms of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. The only incentive left for players to stay, should be Bok selection? PLayers that don’t find that enough incentive: fuckem.
Read your updates on your Rottie
Brilliant stuff. Sounds as though you are enjoying it. While he is so young, think about getting medical insurance for him. They are a costly breed, trust me. Mine ruptured his ligament in his knee…..(herding cows….) and the corrective surgery with all the meds, x rays – rehab vets, specialist surgeons etc costs well over 20k. Very common amongst Rotties ligament rupture. Just a tip
I’m with Medipet. They are based in Tokai, and they are brilliant. Well worth the monthly premium.

What a load of cr-p Willy.
The Game was there for the taking, right to the last seconds.

15 Mar 2013, 10:53 am
@polaris-80: I sincerely hope I’m wrong but I’m really starting to suspect match-fixing in rugby as well.
Two small examples…Brumbies vs Bulls @ Moftus last year where the most blatant knock-on ever went unnoticed…
And then the Brumbies’ last pool game against the Blues who had basically been beaten by all and sundry go and hammer them in Canberra to put them out of the playoffs.
And I am by no means singling out the Brumbies, these sort of things affect “most” teams…
15 Mar 2013, 11:00 am
@BrumbiesBoy-103: i agree…..lots of engineered results imo

15 Mar 2013, 11:16 am

If the Landers had a better start to the season than the Canes, the former would have been allowed to win.
