Chiefs cut down courageous Kings

Chiefs cut down courageous Kings

The Chiefs won in Port Elizabeth but the Kings continue to win respect through courage and conviction.

Super Rugby’s 2012 champions were made to fight for the 35-24 bonus point victory and their decision to twice kick for posts in the last three minutes was acknowledgement of the Kings’ effort.

The Chiefs led 18-13 at half-time and stretched the lead to 32-13 on the hour before the Kings produced an inspired 10 minutes to reduce the deficit to just eight points.

Many predicted humiliation for the Kings pre the season and in the last two weekends the Kings have played last season’s finalists and won huge favour with their commitment.

Home ground advantage and the emotion of playing in front of a passionate crowd has aided the Kings, but they really are struggling for quality players and already they have a handful of frontline players to injury.

It didn’t get any better on Friday when stand-in captain Darron Nell got hurt in the warm-up. Lock Steven Sykes took over the captaincy and he also left the field in the 60th minute. The Kings, in three matches, have had three captains. The attrition rate will only get higher for a team who have already won the hearts of the Kiwis and Australian neutrals because of their passion and refusal to be intimidated.

A week ago the Kings kept the 2012 finalists, the Sharks, tryless but they were always going to be stretched against the more creative Chiefs backs, for whom winger Leila Masaga scored a hat-trick.

Chiefs fullback Gareth Anscombe kicked well and Liam Messam celebrated his 100th Super Rugby appearance with victory. But the greatest roar again belonged to teenage winger Sergeal Pietersen who scored through an intercept.

Demetri Catrikilis also impressed as did No 8 Jacques Engelbrecht.

The Kings leave for New Zealand on Sunday and while they will struggle in the month overseas the side has exceeded expectation in the opening month of tournament in beating the Force and losing to the Sharks (by nine points) and the Chiefs (by 11 points).

“In 1964, the Tricolores returned to South Africa for a mini-tour, losing only one of their six games and once again beating the Springboks [8–6] in the battle of Springs; a Test described until his dying day by Dr Danie Craven as the worst yet to be seen in South Africa.”

Was dit ‘n harde of ‘n vuil wedstryd Skop?

    Those were great days.

We’re slowly but surely getting it back on a local level. Last week there was a tournament in Port Nolloth where 16 “dorpspanne” took part. I reckon there were between 120-150 cars in the stadium.

    @I am a stormer-395:
Yeah. With Kallis, Duminy, Morkel still in the wings, one is not that worried yet.

Maybe it is a good thing that we are not doing that well, consistently, now. Less pressure on the boys when the Championship Trophy starts.

‘n lionbeker wedstryd , as ek reg onthou.

    29 July 1967 Ellis Park, Johannesburg 14 – 19 France

25 July 1964 Pam Brink Stadium, Springs, South Africa 6 – 8 France

    16 August 1958 Ellis Park, Johannesburg 5 – 9 France

    Sterk Frans spanne daai jare

It might be so David but remeber when I grew up tv, radio and print were controlled by the government and they decided what we could see sport and rugby included

We knew about Naas, De Wet Ras and Gerald Bosch but unfortunately not about the players Peter is referring to

And another thing to remember is you only know and remember the players you grew up with and onwards

I know about Boy Louw but that’s about it as it was way before my time.

Danie Craven I only know as adminstrator, not as a player

My dad told me about Tom van Vollenhoven, how fast he was, and how Hennie Muller smoked a cigarette during halftime against the All Blacks

And how Uli’s dad Louis tackled Jannie Engelbrecht and broke his collarbone yet he stayed on the field and scored three tries winning the CC for WP

And how gys Pitzer hit Pullen once and they had to carry him off

But I don’t know them like I know Divan, Schalk Sr, Burger, Hugh Reece Edwards or most likely my favourite Uli

It’s a shame we don’t know the players of the era Peter referred too, but at least we will know the new generation, like Akona who has given stirling service to the Bulls

Somebody explained it like this the other day.

In ODI’s, you need to vary your line and length in order for the batsman not to get use to where you are going to pitch the ball. Him being a line and length bowler, the coaching staff are afraid that if Vernon also plays ODI’s, that it may mess up his impeccable line and length at test level. They therefor decided to rather not select him for the ODI’s.

Hope it makes sense to you.

True David. When you sit and listen to the old people telling of local derbies in the 50 and 60s in East London , PE, Fort Beaufort is a marvel to watch the liveliness/twinkle in their eyes.

For me the best was seeing one of the Watson brothers, not sure which one, playing in late 70s playing in Fort Beaufort running in socks only. How he lost his shoes is a mystery to this day to me.

Ok. Vernon has let the selectors know that he is not just a test specialist. Put it this way – he would love to resume his international career in the ODI format where he previously made his debut for this country. With the amount of ODI’s happening between now and October, that might happen.

Can remember to this day those derbies. Remember at Newlands, must have been 82/83 not sure, Naas vs Michael dup in currie cup final. Unfortunately Naas got injured against ET and Giepie Nel had to face Michael Dup. What a game.

Michael was great on that day. Nearly moered Giepie after the latter fell on him with his knees when he scored a try.

1982 -1986 is forever etched in the minds of most WP supporters who were old enough back then, I guess.
