Smit set for Sharks return

John Smit will take over as Sharks CEO.

Durban newspapers, by way of veteran rugby writer Mike Greenaway, who wrote Smit’s book ‘Captain in the cauldran’, reported that Smit would take over from Brian van Zyl in July.

Greenaway wrote that Van Zyl was due to retire at the end of the year but that Smit would be confirmed the new CEO at an executive meeting next Monday.

Smit, who is playing for Saracens, had agreed to one more year of playing at Toulon but according to Greenaway the Sharks have acquired a release for their man.

Smit, the 2007 World Cup-winning Bok captain, spent his entire provincial and regional playing career in South Africa, playing for the Sharks.

He will, at 35 years-old, be the youngest CEO appointed to a South African franchise.
