Stormers aim for 60 league points

Jean de Villiers says 60 league points will get the Stormers a home semi-final.

But for the Stormers to get to 60 De Villiers’s team can’t afford to lose again this season – and that’s an unrealistic expectation.

De Villiers, in discussion with Argus Rugby writer Zelim Nel, expressed confidence the Stormers were back in the Super Rugby race after the win against the Sharks.

The Stormers have 20 league points from seven matches, which include three wins.

They have a bye this weekend and tour Australia and New Zealand for a month. On their return they play the Kings twice, the Bulls and Cheetahs at home and also have a difficult match against the resurgent Reds, who have traditionally done well at Newlands.

‘We have nine matches in which to get 36 points. It’s easier said than done,’ said De Villiers. ‘But that’s our goal. Sixty points is sort of where you want to get.’

De Villiers conceded the season had been tough on his side, but felt the win against the Sharks had been a turning point.

‘The bye comes at a nice time for us,’ said De Villiers. ‘As you can see from our injury list, it will do us well to get a week off. After that, we’ll have guys like Scarra Ntubeni, Rynhardt Elstadt and Bryan Habana coming back.’

De Villiers also said flyhalf Gary van Aswegen produced a balanced display and felt the flyhalf did justice to his selection.
