Bakkies Botha was again at the heart of Toulon’s Heineken Cup charge, but it was another veteran Jonny Wilkinson who stole the headlines.
Wilkinson was brilliant in kicking seven penalties and a drop goal as Toulon beat Saracens 24-12 at Twickenham for a place in the Heineken Cup final against Clermont.
Wilkinson, helped by a dominant pack, outplayed England flyhalf Owen Farrell and his drop goal to take the game to 21-12 with five minutes to play was the stuff of folklore.
Botha, who has been outstanding for Toulon this season, and Rossouw were impressive and Toulon were always the stronger up front.
Joe van Niekerk played the last 10 minutes at No 8. He replaced Kiwi Chris Masoe who was the forward of the match.
There were 12 South African-born players in the two match squads at Twickenham.
Clermont on Saturday beat Munster 16-10.
It is likely that Toulon and Clermont will also play the Top 14 final.
