The Sharks have lost Frans Steyn and young No 8 Lubabalo Mtembu to injury for the rest of their Super Rugby tour.
Steyn was in hospital for a suspected broken bone in his lower leg and Mtembu’s shoulder injury was severe enough for him to be sent home.
Sharks coach John Plumtree said injuries were part of the game but lamented the extent to which the injury curse has struck a side many, including myself, believed capable of winning the tournament.
It looks a long shot now with the Sharks having lost four in succession and five in nine starts.
The Sharks have lost 15 front line players to injury at various stages of the season and have already drafted in three Lions players, one of whom (Andries Coetzee) is also injured.
‘Our injury situation is not good. Our backs are decimated,’ said Plumtree. ‘We’ve just got to keep going. We’ve got to get some fit guys organised in time and just get on with it.’
