Toulon are the club champions of Europe.
The men from the south of France edged Clermont 16-15 in Dublin with Jonny Wilkinson kicking the match winning conversion on 65 minutes and then charging down David Skrela’s drop goal with less than two minutes left.
The scores were level 3-all at halftime but two Clermont tries ensured a 15-6 lead and probable European Cup victory.
Toulon, though, played more like fighters than mercenaries and their foreign legion refused to surrender.
South African duo Bakkies Botha and Danie Rossouw joined a select club of players to have won the European Cup and Super Rugby titles and fellow South African Joe van Niekerk also delighted in European glory.
The two teams are also favoured to meet in the French Top 14 final after finishing first and second.
Clermont beat Toulon 27-26 in their last league outing but on the biggest club stage in Europe the one point differential favoured Wilkinson’s Toulon.
