The Bulls played like a team not interested in getting on a plane to New Zealand and gifted the Brumbies a Super Rugby semi-final win in Pretoria.
The Brumbies scored in the last minute to win 26-23 after the Bulls captain Dewald Potgieter turned down three successive penalty goals from straight in front with the Bulls leading just 20-19.
It was the most outrageous decision-making and Bulls coach Frans Ludeke was livid, screaming instructions to take the points. When the Bulls got a fourth chance to kick at goal Ludeke sent on the water carrier to change the captain’s decision.
Steyn finally kicked at goal and succeeded but then the Brumbies tore apart the Bulls defence in the last move of the game to seal the win.
The Brumbies were the better side all night but the Bulls really played like a team that had absolutely no desire to fly to New Zealand and play the Chiefs in Hamilton.
It is a good thing they didn’t get on a plane because with the performance in Cape Town a fortnight ago and in Pretoria tonight they would have taken an embarrassing hammering.
The performance was disgraceful in terms of attitude. The only person who looked passionate about wanting to win was the coach.
Brumbies coach Jake White must also get all the plaudits for getting another one over the South Africans.
The Brumbies will also offer a better contest to the Chiefs.
