Griquas scored in injury time as the visitors beat the Sharks 32-30 in Durban.
Sharks coach Brad McLeoad-Henderson and CEO John Smit’s tenure didn’t get the expected victorious start and the visitors were full value for their Currie Cup upset win.
Griquas have always been a difficult team to beat at home but to travel to Durban and secure four league points is a huge win. Equally it is a big game to lose at home for the Sharks, who got the solitary bonus point for finishing within seven points of Griquas.
The Sharks, who trailed 13-0 midway through the first half, led 20-16 at halftime. Griquas led 22-20 after 65 minutes but the Sharks looked to have sealed it with a 30-25 lead with a minute to go.
But Griquas weren’t done and Carel Greeff barged over after the hooter and Nico Scheepers added a difficult conversion. Scheepers kicked eight from eight but the man of the match award went to Sharks skipper Jacques Botes, who scored two tries.
