Lions self-destruct

The Lions lost in Durban more than the Sharks won – but all that counts is the scoreboard and not how the points were fashioned.

The Sharks got their first Currie Cup win of the season in beating the Lions 33-25 after leading 20-17 at halftime.

The Lions, on reflection, will cringe when watching the match DVD. They were a greater danger to themselves than the Sharks.

They put themselves into strong scoring positions, only to make basic mistakes in handling or decision-making. And then they showed a disregard in protecting the ball. They were also guilty of handing back what proved match-winning momentum in gifting the Sharks 10 points within two minutes when in the lead 25-23.

The Lions also had two tries disallowed because of TMO referrals that showed obstruction in the build-up to the tries.

The Sharks started slowly and enjoyed a decent last 20 minutes in the first half, but the scoreline in the second didn’t reflect the struggles of the Sharks.

But for now – the next 24 hours – the struggles will mean nothing. They got the win and that’s all that will matter in Durban.
