Romain Poite has acknowledged officially he got it wrong to yellow card Bismarck du Plessis for the tackle on Dan Carter. And the IRB will sanction him.
Poite is likely to be stood down for a period of time after the howlers in Auckland.
It should not have needed an official review for Poite and his assistants and TMO to accept they called it wrong. The review was there for him to see and make an assessment at the time.
An IRB statement said: ‘Just as players and coaches make mistakes, the decision was an unfortunate case of human error by the match officials, who, having reviewed the match, fully recognise and accept that they made a mistake in the application of law.
‘All match official performances are thoroughly reviewed and assessed by the IRB and are considered when appointments are made for future test matches.’
