Kempton Park’s 20-10 victory over Momument in the Beeld Trophy final is an indication of the strength of South African schoolboy rugby.

Kempton Park have enjoyed their best season since 1989 – the last time they celebrated Beeld Trophy glory. It was the second fairytale story of the year after Centurion powered to the Nu Power title after downing Waterkloof in the final.

Monnas were touted as favourites as they were at home and beat Klofies in the semi-finals last week. They also had former SA Schools representative flyhalf Jako van der Walt and Golden Lions U18 Craven Week captain Chris Massyn in their line-up.

However, Kempies shocked the hosts as they enjoyed a comfortable win. This was their fourth major victory of the season, having beaten Waterkloof, EG Jansen and Middelburg too.

‘It was a total team performance,’ Kempton Park 1st XV coach Kwagga Loubser told Schoolboy Derby. ‘Wee last won the title 23 years ago, so there was plenty of hunger among the players. I was very proud of our defensive effort – we refused to back off.’

Loubser added that Kempies’ triumph proved that the traditional rugby schools are getting challenged more regularly by the so-called ‘smaller schools’.

‘South African school rugby is becoming more professional every year. Every team has a chance of beating the other on its day.’

Monument will face Kempton Park in the Beeld Trophy final after beating Waterkloof 23-12 on Tuesday.

Klofies were favourites to win the semi-final encounter after their 21-19 over Monnas a fortnight ago. However, the boys from Krugersdorp got their revenge as they scored three tries to record a comfortable win.

Monnas 1st XV head coach Wynand Moolman believes flyhalf Jako van der Walt’s performance was pivotal in the win.

‘Jako had a great outing with the boot, he attacked the line well and was the playmaker with ball in hand. He played a big part in our win,’ Moolman told Schoolboy Derby. ‘We’ve suffered many injuries during the year. But most of those players have recovered and we are playing better rugby.

‘Our attention is now on the final on Saturday. Kempton Park is rated as the underdogs, but we won’t take them lightly. They beat Middelburg away from home and downed EG Jansen earlier this year. They have a strong team and a very good backline.’

Moolman stressed that his players will need to work on their composure ahead of the title decider.

‘We could’ve score more tries against Waterkloof, but we were too overeager. We need to be patient during our build-up and finish our opportunities.’

Monnas have enjoyed more success in this annual interschool derby in recent years, but Klofies managed to hold on for a close win over their Krugersdorp-based rivals.

Waterkloof flyhalf Kobus Marias’ three penalties in the second half were the match-winning scores as it saw the hosts break down a 19-12 deficit and surge to victory. It was an impressive comeback from the hosts, especially after Monument dominated from the outset.

Monnas boasted the bigger pack, and this saw them dominate the collisions in the first quarter. They capitalised on this ascendancy as wing Cisko du Toit and inside centre Rigard Viljoen crossed the chalk. Both tries came from Waterkloof errors in their own red zone.

However, Klofies managed to draw level before the break as wing Francois de Kock finished off an 80m counter-attack, while tighthead prop Johan van Wyk powered over from the close range. The score read 12-12 at half-time.

In the second half, Monnas scored early with flank Dylan Vlok sniping the fringes. But Waterkloof gained control of the game with a clever tactical kicking game thereafter, giving Marias the platform to punish the visitors’ ill-discipline and to seal the triumph.

GARETH DUNCAN previews the Schoolboy Derby feature match of the weekend between Waterkloof and Monument.

Monnas have enjoyed more success in recent years as they’ve triumphed in four of the last seven fixtures between the two teams. However, the Krugersdorp-based school has suffered a inconsistent season, while Klofies have enjoyed a good run of form in recent weeks.

Waterkloof 1st XV head coach Jan Mollentze is confident that his team can do the job on Saturday.

‘A win over Monnas will be huge for us,’ Mollentze told keo.co.za’s Schoolboy Derby. ‘I’ve been very happy with our results of the last couple of weeks. It was all due to team work and dedication. We also suffered many injuries during the season, and most of our first-choice players are back.’

Klofies will be without star players outside centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg and scrumhalf Justin Phillips, while Monnas will have their key players like flyhalf Jako van der Walt and skipper Chris Massyn. But Mollentze stressed that he has replacements who will fill in well.

He also added that the forward battle will be telling between the two teams.

‘Monnas have a massive pack and their strengths lie at the scrum and lineouts. We have a smaller pack, but our forwards are quite mobile. It will be interesting to see if my forwards will be able to handle the pressure and the physicality Monnas bring on Saturday.’

The match will be televised on SS1 at 1:30pm.

Waterkloof - 15 Brendon Swanepoel 14 Werner Rossouw, 13 Raynardt Honiball, 12 Lourens Boddington, 11 Francois de Kock, 10 Kobus Marais, 9 John-Henry Collen, 8 Marnus Steyn (c), 7 Stephan Smith, 6 Sean Joyce, 5 Henco Saayman, 4 Werner Fourie, 3 Johan van Wyk, 2 Jovan Erasmus, 1 Dimitri Ttappous
Subs: 16 Reinach Venter, 17 Xander van Wyk, 18 Nico Steenkamp, 19 Jeandré de Beer, 20 David Joyce, 21 Shaun Pike, 22 Ernst Naudé.

Monument – 15 Barend Herbst, 14 Cisko du Toit, 13 Abrie Reynolds, 12 Rigard Viljoen, 11 Sheldon Bester, 10 Jaco van der Walt, 9 Steven du Plessis, 8 Chris Massyn (c), 7 Dylon Vlok, 6 Ruan MacDonald, 5 Frans van Wyk, 4 André Venter, 3 Ruan Snyman, 2 Wehmeyer Joubert, 1 Günther Janse van Vuuren.
Subs: 16 Zybrandt Lombaard, 17 Francois van Heerden, 18 Dwayne Pienaar, 19 Nico Swartz, 20 Stefan Fitzgerald, 21 Ruan Conradie, 22 Gerdus van der Walt.

Schalk Snyman was found guilty of assault after he shoulder charged referee Mlungiseleli Mdashe, following EG Jansen’s 24-18 loss to Kempton Park. According to the terms of his ban, Snyman may not be directly or indirectly involved with rugby for five years, with three years being suspended.

Chairman of the Falcons Rugby Union’s (FRU) legal committee Jacques Pienaar told the Beeld that Snyman would be allowed to be involved ‘at other levels’. FRU executive head Jurie Coetzee said Snyman still had an important role to play as he would share the consequences of his mistake with other coaches and pupils and help protect the sport.

GARETH DUNCAN previews the Schoolboy Derby feature match of the weekend between Maritzburg College and Affies.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SCHOOLBOY DERBY NEWS

Affies will travel to Pietermaritzburg this weekend, to take on College in a big encounter. The Pretoria school will be favourites as they have only suffered three defeats against the latter over the last 15 years.

Maritzburg College 1st XV head coach Ryan Strudwick admitted that they will be the underdogs heading into this clash.

‘We are under no illusions. We know Affies are a very strong team.’ Strudwick told keo.co.za’s Schoolboy Derby. ‘They’ve had a strong run this year and have picked up many good wins. We haven’t had much success against them and we’ve been inconsistent this season too. But we have prepared well and will have home-ground advantage, so hopefully we can capitalise on that.’

Strudwick believes the forwards battle will be vital between the two teams.

‘You can compare Affies to this year’s U18 Blue Bulls Craven Week team – they play the same style and have the same strengths. And you saw what happened to the Golden Lions in the final once the Bulls got onto the front foot.

‘We need to be competitive up front, get them on the back foot and put them under pressure. The breakdown battles will be vital, and we’ll need to be accurate at our set-pieces.’

Maritzburg College have six players who featured at the U18 Craven and Academy Weeks, and Strudwick believes this experience will be vital. They have the availability of star fullback Jesse Kriel, who will be dangerous on attack and as a key playmaker.

Affies have a massive pack up front, with loosehead prop Pierre Schoeman and eighthman Steven Meiring set to play important roles. They also have dangerous backs that boast lots of skill and pace. Flyhalf Ryno Eksteen will be pivotal in how his outside speedsters run on Saturday.

Maritzburg College – 15 Jesse Kriel, 14 Cyle Muil, 13 Marcel Coetzee, 12 Richard Bamber, 11 Banele Ngwenya, 10 Lukas Booysen, 9 Josh Rencken, 8 Reegan Smith (c), 7 Cameron Christie, 6 Nicholas Muller, 5 Robert Kamhoot, 4 Everett Pieterse, 3 Mvelo Khumalo, 2 Vuyo Khathide, 1 Njabula Gumede.
Subs: 16 Alex Cahill, 17 Seko Buthelezi, 18 James Smith, 19 Jacques Conradie, 20 Kelvin Elder, 21 Thato Molelekoa, 22 Murray Janse van Rensburg.

Affies – 15 Constant Pretorius, 14 Marcus Kleinbooi, 13 Jurie Linde, 12 Nico Lee, 11 Andries van der Merwe, 10 Ryno Eksteen, 9 Louis Venter, 8 Steven Meiring, 7 Heinrich Viljoen, 6 Albert van Heerden, 5 Nicolas Janse van Rensburg, 4 Jean Droste, 3 WP Eloff, 2 Francois Steyn, 1 Pierre Schoeman.
Subs: 16 Cornell de Waal, 17 Xander Swart, 18 Gerhard de Beer, 19 Calvon Allison, 20 Heine Lombaard, 21 Marchant van der Heever, 22 Thys van Wyk.

The match will be broadcast on SS5 on Saturday at 5pm.

GARETH DUNCAN watched the Blue Bulls rally to a 47-0 victory over the Golden Lions in the U18 Craven Week unofficial final at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The best team were crowned the unofficial champions this year.

The schoolboys from Pretoria were the best trained squad and showed great cohesion throughout the week. The pack dominated, their backline play was superb and most importantly, they showed great composure and a clinical edge when it came to try-scoring opportunities.

Despite the heavy rain and slippery field, the Bulls adapted best. During the build-up to this game, head coach Riaan Brandt believed the wet weather was going to restrict his dangerous backs. But the speedsters still managed to run riot when the chances arose, with midfield combination Rohan Jansen van Rensburg and Jurie Linde the standout performers.

The Golden Lions, who have been proud of their defence and physicality this week, struggled in the wet conditions and were completely outplayed. They failed to build any momentum and were on the back foot for most parts of the game. While they monstered most of the scrum battles, the closest they came to scoring was a missed penalty from flyhalf Jako van der Walt in the second half.

With the rain storming down in the opening 35, it was difficult for both teams to have any continuity with ball in hand. But the Bulls managed to finish off a drive into the Lions’ 22m area, with Jansen van Rensburg sneaking in at the corner after some smart passes.

Flyhalf Ryno Eksteen added the extras and a penalty as the Bulls held a 10-0 lead at half-time.

The rain stopped after the break, but it only made things easier for the leaders. It was one-way traffic as the Bulls ran in another six tries via Jansen van Rensburg, flank Thabo Mabuza, outside centre Linde, fullback Jaco Hayward, wing Marquit September and No 8 Steven Meiring.

EP, who were unbeaten during the tournament, might feel disappointed for not being given a spot in the unofficial final on their home ground, instead of the Lions. But to be fair, the Bulls were a class apart from all the other teams.

While Eksteen and Meiring will be joining WP after school next year (rumours that Jansen van Rensburg will head to the Cape are untrue), most of this year’s players in the Bulls squad will remain at the union.

Another scary sight is the talent that will be heading to Pretoia in 2013, including Maritzburg College twins Daniel and Jesse Kriel and Paarl Gym and Baby Bok flyhalf Handre Pollard. The Bulls clearly have the best recruitment system in the country.
