GARETH DUNCAN reports on Paarl Gym’s 16-9 victory over Paarl Boys’ at Faure Street Stadium on Saturday.

A close contest was expected in this year’s Paarl Derby as both teams produced impressive form throughout the year, having only lost one match apiece. And the action on the field didn’t disappoint as only seven points were the difference between victory and defeat.

It was Gimmies No 8 Rikus Bothma who scored the telling try during the first half, which came from a scrum inside Boishaai’s red zone. After a strong ball carry from flyhalf Handre Pollard, the WP U18 Craven Week eighthman powered through to dive over under the posts. Pollard added the conversion and two penalties to give Gimmies a 13-3 half-time lead.

In the second stanza, Boishaai dominated. However, they couldn’t finish their try scoring opportunities and Paarl Gym held on. Wing Tiaan Mouton kicked two penalties, in addition to his first three-pointer in the opening 35. Pollard’s third penalty was enough to see his team through to victory.

Paarl Gym 1st XV head coach Christoff Lotter lauded his team’s performance.

‘We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy contest, but my players started the match very well,’ Lotter told keo.co.za’s Schoolboy Derby. ‘We could’ve scored a second try just before half-time, but we lost the ball forward. But in hindsight, Rikus Bothma’s try proved to be the match clincher.

‘Paarl Boys’ played very well in the second half, but we managed to hold on. I think the presence of Handre Pollard lifted out spirits. We played a couple of centres and scrumhalves as in his place when he wasn’t around. He also recently recovered from the leg injury he picked up during Craven Week, so he didn’t get a lot of time to train.

‘But having him available brought back a lot of rhythm to our backline and he kicked important points. He’s a very important player, and he proved why on Saturday.’

While the Bulls will be chuffed with their signing of Baby Bok and WP junior flyhalf Handre Pollard, they have lost two of their Craven Week players to the Cape union.

Meiring and Eksteen, both based at Affies, will make the rare trek down south as they’ve both signed one-year junior contracts with WP.

Bulls U18 head coach Riaan Brandt confirmed the news.

‘Steven and Ryno will leave at the end of the year,’ Brandt told keo.co.za’s Schoolboy Derby. ‘I think they will both do well and will get their opportunities at a more professional level.

‘Steven has been part of our impressive forward displays at Craven Week, while Ryno has shown his class in our two wins so far. Especially against the Pumas, where he controlled the game and backline well and scored 16 points in our 36-10 win.’

GARETH DUNCAN watched the Blue Bulls cruise to a 36-10 win over the Pumas in the U18 Craven Week day four feature match in PE.

It was a one-side contest, with the Bulls running in five tries to seal their second consecutive triumph of the tournament. Two of them were score via massive tighthead prop Johan Bannink (who weighs 130kg and and stands at 1.89m), who powered over from lose range on two occasions. TWing Marquit September, scrumhalf George-Lee Erasmus and flyhalf Ryno Eksteen also crossed the chalk.

Eksteen’s influence was pivotal in the win, especially with the boot. He kicked four conversions and a penalty to take the game away from the Pumas. While the Bulls forwards were also dominant, he spearheaded a backline that ran rampant at full force.

This saw the victors dominate the first half to lead 24-3 at the break. The Pumas opened the scoring via the boot of flyhalf Brandon Thomson, but it was all Bulls thereafter. Wing Marquit September finished smartly out wide to sneak in at the corner, while Bannick sniped the fringes to dive over under the posts. The Garsfontein front-rower then crashed over from a quick penalty tap on the stroke of half-time.

The game died down in the second stanza, with both teams guilty of errors on attack. But finishes from Erasmus and Eksteen was enough for the win. The Pumas grabbed a consolation via flank Willandre Kotzenberg.

This result will see the Bulls take on the Golden Lions in the unofficial final on Saturday.
