The Lions multi talented outside back Ruan Combrinck is a shock omission from the Springboks Rugby Championship squad but there are call-ups for young backs Curwin Bosch and Warren Gelant.

Sharks loose-forward twins Jean-Luc and Dan du Preez are included in the squad of 34.

Bulls flyhalf Handre Pollard, who has been crocked for the last year with injury, is another surprise selection given his lack of match conditioning and struggles with injury this year.

Frans Steyn was not considered for selection and Francois Hougaard is the only foreign-based South African in the squad.

Springbok captain Warren Whiteley is also not available because of injury.
