Federico Mendez aims to make the Springbok scrum even more dangerous this season.
The former Pumas front-rower, who played for WP last year, is expected to sign as a scrum expert to Jake White’s Boks in the next few days.
“I can guarantee the Bok scrum will get better,” Mendez told the Sunday Times.
Final approval has to be given by the SA Rugby Union on Monday, but, as Mendez says: “They are interested in my services and I’m delighted to be asked to help.”
Mendez first played for Argentina in 1990 as an 18-year old and his 71st and final Test was against the British & Irish Lions last May.
“I first met with [Bok forward coach] Gert Smal when I was in South Africa, then with Jake White and finally we met again in Paris last year,” he said.
When the Springboks were in Buenos Aires before that, Mendez met with senior players John Smit, Schalk Burger and Victor Matfield.
“They later spoke to Jake telling him that they wanted me involved.”
