Fourie faces six week lay-off

The Bulls coaching staff are sweating over the knee injury obtained by Fourie du Preez at practice on Tuesday.

The Bulls scrumhalf, who has only just assumed the captaincy from the injured Victor Matfield, will find out on Wednesday just how serious the damage is.

“We are concerned about Fourie’s injury because he’s hurt his medial ligaments and cartilage in his right knee,” Bulls doctor Tommy Smook told Beeld. “The ligament’s stretched and there’s also a small tear.

“It doesn’t look as if he’s hurt his crucial ligaments,” said Smook. “His knee is still so swollen that we weren’t able to have a solar scan. It should be possible [on Wednesday].”

According to Smook, Fourie could be out for up to six weeks, which would be a massive blow to Bulls’ hopes of reaching the semis for the second consecutive year.

Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer couldn’t believe his side’s bad luck. “Fourie wasn’t even injured in a contact session – he hurt himself taking a high ball,” he said.
