Same again for Bully Boys

The lessons from last year’s Vodacom Super 12 have not been forgotten, and Heyneke Meyer has named the same match 22 for the second consecutive week.

The momentum generated during the Bulls’ home-run last year was due primarily to consistency in selection, and after the decisive downing of the Cheetahs on Friday, Meyer has entrusted the same personnel to account for the Brumbies.

Meyer will again look to his huge back row to aide the one-off runner strategy that has become beloved to Loftus, and the backline is both settled and potent.

The tight five, which appeared slightly vulnerable on paper in comparison to last year’s brutes, confounded the critics by ensuring there would be no repeat of the Currie Cup final calamity in Bloem on Friday. They will be expected to provide plentiful first phase possession.

Speaking to keo.co.za, Meyer stated that even though the Brumbies are notoriusly bad travellers and have struggled against the physical Bulls in the past, any victory would be extremely hard fought.

“We’ve always had good results against the Brumbies, but I’m not a big believer in history. Our pack is not what it used to be, they will get there, but they are not there yet. They performed very well in our opening game and the same is expected of them now. Our youngsters are hungry, but we will not just walk over the Brumbies. They have quite a few Wallabies in their pack and it will be a very tight forward battle.”
