The great Jean bluff

Jean de Villiers has been named in the Stormers team to take on the Waratahs, but don’t be surprised if this is no more than a red herring.

The news relating to De Villiers in no more promising than yesterday, when keo.co.za learnt that the Bok playmaker tweaked a groin muscle and was expected to be out for between seven and 10 days.

Coach Kobus van der Merwe and his coaching staff are hoping for a miracle, and stranger things have happened, but the smart money is still on De Villiers taking no part in Saturday’s encounter.

The other possible mindgame ahead of the clash with Ewen McKenzie’s side concerns the wings. Jonghi Nokwe has been named as right wing, with Rayno Benjamin handed jersey 11. This is a role reversal from the last two encounters against the Cats and Spears, and could be a ploy to throw off the planning of McKenzie.

With Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri expected to be the opposition wingers, any advantage Van der Merwe can engineer for his chargers will be welcome.

The rest of the side is as predicted. Hanyani Shimange failed his bid for fitness, and Schalk Brits starts. Even though Shimange is bracketed as a substitute, the likelihood of him playing is poor.
