Crusaders captain Richie McCaw will not play against the Stormers in Saturday night’s Vodacom Super 14 match at Newlands.
This will be McCaw’s second break of the season after he missed the round six clash with the Chiefs. Former All Black skipper Reuben Thorne takes over the Crusaders captaincy.
McCaw left the field in the second half against the Force with a cut close to an eye, but coach Robbie Deans said that was not why he was missing the Cape Town match.
“It’s been part of the plan from the outset,” he told the Christchurch press.
The Crusaders arrived in Cape Town without lock Ross Filipo, who has returned home to rest a hip flexor injury. Rookie lock Craig Clarke made the trip to link up with the team in Perth after receiving a 3am wake-up call.
“He thought the first call was a hoax from a mate, but he responded to the second one,” Deans said.
