Schalk: “I’ll be back”

Schalk Burger insists he will play for the Springboks again.

The Bok flank, who recently underwent a neck fusion operation, told Cape Times journalist Karen Breytenbach that he’d be back in the green and gold.

“With this kind of injury you realise you’re not immortal. I won’t rush back for anyone else. But I will play for South Africa again, and as long as I possibly can. I’m not ruling out playing abroad one day, but I’d do it for the cultural experience, not money. We have an unbelievable lifestyle here. I’m in no rush to leave.”

Burger said he was going to spend some time in the countryside or adding onto his house in Newlands.

“At the moment I’m doing what normal people do,” he said. “I’m resting, watching some television. In five years I’ve accomplished every goal I’ve set for myself as an individual player. I’m content, so maybe a break is a good thing. If I had a lot of unattained goals, it probably would have been hard for me.”

The Bok flank said that if it turned out that he could no longer play rugby, he would help market his brother’s wine.
