WP get green light for Bok trio

Vodacom Western Province could field three contracted Springboks in Eddie Andrews, De Wet Barry and Hanyani Shimange against the Valke this Saturday.

Of the original 24 South African players contracted at the beginning of the year, the three WP players, as well as Ricky Januarie, Wayne Julies, Marius Joubert and Solly Tyibilika have been cleared to see out the end of the Absa Currie Cup.

Barry, Shimange, Januarie and Julies all fill consistent roles in their respective sides, but Marius Joubert has battled with injury for the whole season, and will in all probability leave Cape Town for the Vodacom Cheetahs without a final start in the WP jersey.

With Warren Britz in fine form, Tyibilika is likely to ride out the year on the Sharks bench. Andrews is also unlikely to receive an immediate start with WP, with JD Moller and Brock Harris enjoying much success in the front row.

Saru has scheduled a meeting this week with the provincial CEO’s and coaches, Springbok coach Jake White and the national teams department to decide which players in the Bok team should be rested for the end of year tour, and which players should be sent back to their provinces.

This is not to say that the door is shut on selection for the tour, and form players in the Currie Cup can still play themselves into contention.

“The Springboks will be medically assessed in a week’s time and we will make a call then,” Convener of Selectors Peter Jooste told Stephen Nell of the Cape Times.
