Kabamba’s captain, Brent’s back

Bok reject Kabamba Floors will lead the SA Sevens side in Dubai and George, while Brent Russell makes a surprising return.

Brent Russell, who recently signed for Western Province, was also named in the squad of 31 for a second preparation camp in Durban. The camp runs from 8-14 November and will include a number of practice matches against the local Sharks Sevens side.

Russell’s inclusion is surprising considering Province have up till now been reluctant to release him for the IRB Series.

Springbok Sevens coach Paul Treu said he was excited by the appointment of Floors as captain.

“Kabamba is in the form of his life. He always leads by example and is a player that really put his body on the line for his team. I think he will be a fantastic captain,” he said.

Treu and the national selectors included three newcomers in the training squad – Jovan Bowels (Falcons), Howard Noble and Conrad Stoltz (both Sharks).

There are also two pairs of brothers – Sarel (Falcons) and Herman Pretorius (Cheetahs), and Howard and Dusty Noble (both Sharks).

“The first camp went reasonably well and the aim would now be to record as much game time as possible and to continue with our conditioning programme to ensure we arrive in Dubai in good shape,” explained Treu.

SA Rugby has also confirmed the appointment of Pieter Visser (Golden Lions) as team manager for Springbok Sevens.
