Landbou pay the Pryce

St Andrew’s edged Boland Landbou 9-7 at the St Stithians Easter Festival on Monday.

Flyhalf James Pryce was the hero for the Grahamstown school, kicking three penalties.

St Andrew’s started the game well, taking on their opponents’ much bigger forward pack and keeping things tight, with Pryce slotting his first penalty midway through the first half after Landbou had infringed at ruck time.

At times the game became tedious with both sides looking clumsy with ball in hand. While Landbou did have several chances to score, their inaccuracy let them down at crucial stages.

After trailing 3-0 at the break, Landbou were penalised twice within the first 10 minutes of the second half and Pryce sent the ball through the uprights on both occasions.

However, Landbou struck back when flanker Christo Scharwtz scored a try after rounding off a move that he had initiated inside his own half. Flyhalf Werner Joubert added the conversion to set up a tense final 15 minutes.

St Andrew’s spent most of that time defending their tryline but held on for a famous victory.

‘This was a colossal win and our team’s tigerish defence won us the game,’ Saints coach Stefan Louwrens told keo.co.za.

St Andrew’s flank Justus Luttig and No 8 James Gotz were the unsung heroes of the match. They were outstanding at the breakdown, stealing plenty of ball, while Gotz was superb on defence.

Pryce is also a player to keep an eye on having already kicked 86 points this season. He is a competent footballer with electric pace.
