Muir Super 7s Tournament a huge sucess

Ithembilihle took the top honours in the U19 division at the inaugural Muir Super 7s rugby festival in Uitenhage at the weekend, while Charlo and Grey High School took the honours in the U13 and U15 sections respectively.

Ithembilihle are one of the leading township rugby schools in the Eastern Cape and they showed this year that they are capable of taking on the bigger schools in the 15-man version of the game.

At Muir College, they defeated Uitenhage and John Walton and drew with Grey in their pool matches before accounting for Despatch in the semi-final.

They then sealed the honours with a well deserved 32-17 win over Muir in the final. Grey beat Despatch in the play-off for third place.

Grey won the U15 section after a round-robin event, with McCarthy and Muir filling second and third places.

Charlo beat Muir 27-17 in the final of the U13 section with Mqhayi finishing third after beating Homabakazi – who collapsed badly after a superb start to the competition.

Andile Witbooi of Muir was the top point-scorer in the U19 section and Brent Christoffels, also from Muir, enjoyed that honour in the the U13 section.

Springbok Sevens captain Mzwandile Stick added glitter to the event with a personal appearance and presented the winners with their prizes.

Each member of the Ithembilihle squad also received a year’s subscription to SA Rugby magazine as part of their prize. All participants also received a free copy of the SA Rugby magazine courtesy of Highbury Safika Media.
