Bosch thump Bishops for historical win

Rondebosch Boys’ upset Bishops with a 34-18 away thrashing in their 100th-year derby on Saturday.

Since 1911, these two southern surburb schools have been duelling and 2011 marked a special occasion. Not only was it their 100th year of rivalry, but it was also Bishops’ 150th-year celebration of rugby at the school.

Bishops were considered the favourites as they were on a four-match winning streak and had home ground advantage while Rondebosch came off two defeats against Paarl Boys’ and Drostdy. But Rondebosch have proved their upset quality before, beating Paarl Gym at home last month, and they pulled through surprisingly in this fixture again. And quite convincingly too as they thumped Bishops, who struggled without their WP Craven Week flyhalf Tim Swiel, by 16 points.

In other results, Boishaai proved why they’re the strongest team in the Western Cape this season with a 44-17 drubbing of a decent Tygerberg side. Paarl Gym edged Oakdale 37-33 in Riversdale while Paul Roos’ poor season continued with a 28-26 defeat to Boland Landbou.
