Fort Hare down Impis

Fort Hare picked up their first win as they downed UKZN 36-21 in Alice in the third round of the Varsity Shield.

Wing Garth van Rayner steered the hosts to victory with his brace, while flank Onke Dubase, speedster Aziyena Mandaba and scrumhalf Sibabalwe Mtsulwana also scored tries. Flyhalf Banda Masixole added three conversions and a penalty to seal the bonus-point win.

No 8 Leon Stevens’ try kept Impis in the game at half-time as they trailed 16-8, but further scores from replacements Jaco Potgieter and Blake Lourens weren’t enough as Fort Hare delivered a strong second-half performance.

In other results, Wits ran in six tries as they thrashed UWC 43-20 in Johannesburg.
