Tuks demolish TUT

Tuks thrashed TUT 40-0, while there were also wins for NMMU, Maties and UJ in the second round of the Varsity Cup.

Tuks got their revenge for last year’s shock Pretoria derby defeat as they ran in five converted tries to secure a massive bonus-point victory against the Vikings in Tshwane.

Fullback Clayton Blommetjies scored the only try in the first half as the visitors led 8-0 at the break.

Tuks then delivered a strong second-half performance, which saw hooker Jacques Momberg, reserve flyhalf Willie du Plessis and centre Dabeon Draghoender cross the chalk. They were also awarded a penalty try at the death as they dominated the TUT pack at a 5m scrum.

In Bloemfontein, the Madibas picked up the shock result of the round as they tamed Shimlas with a 29-27 home defeat.

Free State University looked like the side to beat this season following their impressive win over UCT in Cape Town in round one. However, a strong finish from NMMU saw the visitors come back from a 18-5 half-time deficit to record a famous bonus-point victory. Skipper Jaco Swanepoel was influential with a brace of tries.

Maties picked up back-to-back wins with a 14-12 triumph over Pukke in Potchefstroom, while UCT succumbed to their second straight defeat as they lost 29-15 to UJ in Johannesburg.
