Monnas surge into Beeld final

Monument will face Kempton Park in the Beeld Trophy final after beating Waterkloof 23-12 on Tuesday.

Klofies were favourites to win the semi-final encounter after their 21-19 over Monnas a fortnight ago. However, the boys from Krugersdorp got their revenge as they scored three tries to record a comfortable win.

Monnas 1st XV head coach Wynand Moolman believes flyhalf Jako van der Walt’s performance was pivotal in the win.

‘Jako had a great outing with the boot, he attacked the line well and was the playmaker with ball in hand. He played a big part in our win,’ Moolman told Schoolboy Derby. ‘We’ve suffered many injuries during the year. But most of those players have recovered and we are playing better rugby.

‘Our attention is now on the final on Saturday. Kempton Park is rated as the underdogs, but we won’t take them lightly. They beat Middelburg away from home and downed EG Jansen earlier this year. They have a strong team and a very good backline.’

Moolman stressed that his players will need to work on their composure ahead of the title decider.

‘We could’ve score more tries against Waterkloof, but we were too overeager. We need to be patient during our build-up and finish our opportunities.’
