Harlequins down Tigers for telling win

Keo.co.za wraps up this weekend’s European action.

In the English Premiership, defending champions Harlequins continued their perfect start with a 22-9 victory over the Leicester Tigers at Welford Road. This was their fourth straight win of the tournament, and they top the log thanks to their three four-try bonus points.

It was a vital away victory over fellow title chasers Leicester, who have won nine domestic crowns. Harlequins crossed the chalk via wing Tom Williams, while New Zealand pivot Nick Evans added 14 points via the boot. Scrumhalf Danny Care also kicked a drop goal.

The hosts only managed three penalties via England No 10 Toby Flood.

In other results, the Northampton Saints also secured their fourth consecutive win as they downed Worcester Warriors 37-31 at Franklin’s Garden.

Saracens suffered a shock 14-12 loss to the Exeter Chiefs. Former Stormers flyer Sireli Naqelevuki scored the telling try.

In the French Top 14, Toulon stretched their lead at the top of the standings to four log points as they recorded their sixth successive triumph against Castres (33-12).

Former Sharks flyhalf Frederick Michalak shined in the No 9 jersey for the victors and received a standing ovation when he was substituted in the second half. Former Wallabies centre Matt Giteau, hooker Jean-Charles Orioli and Kiwi wing David Smith scored tries, while English flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson kicked 18 points.

Defending champions Toulouse returned to winning ways as they beat Bayonne 35-6, while Racing Metro edged Biarritz 13-12. Clermont thrashed new boys Grenoble 44-20.

In the Pro12, the Ospreys gave log leaders Scarlets their first loss of the campaign with a 23-16 victory in Llanelli.

Leinster and Munster grabbed expected home wins against Edinburgh (22-16) and the Newport Gwent Dragons (33-13) respectively.
