Duane Vermeulen will captain the Stormers this Saturday due to the absence of several senior players.
Coach Allister Coetzee has confirmed that Schalk Burger (calf), Jean de Villiers (neck), and Deon Fourie (quad) won’t be risked in the coming warm-up match against the Cheetahs.
In the absence of two Stormers captains in Burger and De Villiers, and because of the unavailability of Currie Cup-wining skipper Fourie, Vermeulen will lead the side in Bloemfontein.
Coetzee did add that these injuries aren’t serious, and that all three players should be available for the Stormers’ next warm-up game against Boland. That latter hit-out will be especially important for Burger, who hasn’t played a competitive game in 12 months because of a serious knee injury.
Flank Siya Kolisi is currently struggling with tonsillitis, and could also miss this weekend’s clash in Bloem. In that event, Nizaam Carr will wear the No 6 jersey.
Newcomer Martin Bezuidenhout is set to get a run at hooker, while another Lion in Jaco Taute should be at fullback.
The teams for the match in Bloemfontein will be announced on Wednesday.
