Sam’s the man

Welsh captain Sam Warburton is favoured to captain the British and Irish Lions.

Welsh coach Warren Gatland will confirm the touring squad on Tuesday but early media reports in the United Kingdom suggest that England’s Chris Robshaw and Ireland’s Brian O’Driscoll won’t make the squad.

Gatland, who a few months ago said he would consider Jonny Wilkinson, would have been encouraged by Wilkinson’s Heineken Cup quarter-final and semi-final form. Wilkinson kicked all Toulon’s 45 points in both wins.

Six Nations champions Wales are reportedly the dominant force in the squad and England’s representation is believed to be as little as eight players.

The Wallabies beat Wales three-nil last year in Australia but two of the matches were won by a single point.
