South African Rory Kockott’s moment of brilliance inspired Castres to a 19-14 Top 14 French final win against European champions Toulon.
Kockott scored in the last act before half-time to break a 3-all deadlock. He also added a conversion and two penalties against Jonny Wilkinson’s three penalties.
Wilkinson, brilliant in the last month, missed with three kicks, including two from 50 metres.
Toulon were looking to become the first French team outside of Toulouse to win the European and Domestic titles in the same season.
South Africa’s French international Antonie Claassen also produced an outstanding display while South Africa’s Toulon trio of Danie Rossouw, Bakkies Botha and Joe van Niekerk could not match the intensity of the European Cup triumph against Clermont.
