Stormers smash Cheetahs

The Stormers hammered the Cheetahs in Cape Town to hinder the visitors push for a first ever Super Rugby top six finish.

The Stormers won 28-3 after leading 10-3 at halftime and were comfortably the better side in a match that offered little by way of attack but plenty of mongrel in defence.

This was one I called in the build-up when I wrote the Stormers would crush the Cheetahs spirits, as I just haven’t believed the Cheetahs to be more than a pretender for championship honours.

Saturday was finally a vindication of this view.

The Cheetahs remain in sixth place with 46 league points, two ahead of the Blues and Waratahs. The two teams will meet next week in a match that could determine who finishes sixth. The Cheetahs also have the guarantee of four bye points in the last weekend of the competition’s league stages.

The Sharks and Stormers both have 42 points but with both still to face the Bulls it is unlikely either will make that sixth spot ahead of the Cheetahs or the Blues.

Siya Kolisi was named man of the match.

Stormers – Tries: Deon Fourie, Siya Kolisi, Bryan Habana. Conversions: Joe Pietetsen (2). Penalties: Pietersen (3).
Cheetahs – Penalty: Riaan Smit.
