James O’Connor has been dumped for the remainder of the Rugby Championship.
Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie has lost patience with O’Connor’s off-field antics and the utility back won’t travel to South Africa or Argentina with the Wallabies.
His axing follows an airport incident last Saturday when Federal Police escorted O’Connor off a flight before take off from Perth to Bali. O’Connor was alleged to be too drunk to fly.
O’Connor, just 24 years old, has played 44 times for the Wallabies. He was the youngest ever Super Rugby debutant when selected to play the Reds as a 17 year-old schoolboy. He was also the second youngest to debut for the Wallabies, at just 18 years-old.
O’Connor missed the 2011 Wallabies World Cup squad announcement because he had been out drinking the night before and in the last year has often been in the news because of off-field antics.
O’Connor’s Super Rugby contract with the Rebels was not renewed at the end of the tournament this season and he is currently without a Super Rugby home.
