Schalk Burger and Johan Goosen will play 40 minutes in this weekend’s Currie Cup semi-finals. is it enough to make the Springboks End of Year touring squad?
What’s your view?
Mine is I’d pick then both if they are available.
Goosen has struggled with injury and there have been concerns that he takes too much contact as a flyhalf and that his body needs to get stronger. Dan Carter and Jonny Wilkinson also have taken contact throughout their careers and the game’s two great flyhalves have suffered at times because of their physical approach.
Goosen can’t be wrapped in cotton wool. He must play.
Burger’s comeback is one of the great stories in South African and world rugby.
He too is an invaluable addition to any team.
Burger missed 18 months of rugby because of injury and illness and came close to losing his life because of illness. It was feared he would never play again but he has now played three Currie Cup matches as a second half replacement. His game time has gone from 20-30 minutes and expectations are he will play 40 minutes in the semi-final and final.
And yes I am making the assumption that Western Province will beat the Lions.
He will then be ready to be integrated into Heyneke Meyer’s Boks for the first time since Meyer took over as Bok coach.
