Four-try WP get lucky

Western Province beat the Lions at Newlands but had every bit of good fortune in winning 36-23.

Province were superb in the first 45 minutes in racing to a 28-9 lead. Then the momentum changed and the Lions produced an outstanding 30 minutes that produced two tries and should have produced at leasy two yellow cards against Western Province.

WP hooker Scarra Ntubeni was yellow-carded for a professional foul on 70 minutes and thereafter WP were penalised four times on their tryline and not once did referee Stuart Berry go to the cards.

It was inconsistent and awful officiating and Berry proved incapable of making the obvious decisions because WP were already down to 14 men.

It killed the Lions comeback and the 31-23 deficit remained until the last minute when Province countered and scored through lock Michael Rhodes.

The victory, WP’s first bonus point win in the competition, takes WP top the table.

0 Welcome to DHL Newlands. The weather is overcast but rain looks unlikely.
0 Golden Lions coach Johan Ackermann has made several changes to his run-on side. In the back-line, Michael Bondesio has recovered from injury and will start at scrum-half in place of Ross Cronje who starts on the bench. At fly-half, Marnitz Boshoff will take the place of the injured Elton Jantjies, while Lionel Cronje and Lionel Mapoe will pair up in the midfield. Chrysander Botha also returns from injury and will start at wing, with Andries Coetzee shifting to full-back. Among the forwards, Willie Britz has been promoted from the bench and into the starting line-up. Meanwhile, Hugo Kloppers and Kobus de Kock are both new additions on the bench.
0 Western Province head coach Allister Coetzee has made four changes to his team for this clash. Half-backs Louis Schreuder and Demetri Catrakilis will start in the backline, whilst fit-again flanker Rynhardt Elstadt returns at seven, which sees Michael Rhodes shift back into the second-row. Schreuder and Catrakilis come in for Nic Groom and Kurt Coleman, respectively, with Rhodes replacing youngster Tazz Fuzani in the four jersey. Scrum-half Groom and fly-half Coleman will warm the bench this week, but lock Fuzani drops out altogether with loose forwards Schalk Burger and Josh Katzen continuing amongst the replacements.
