Racism rife at SuperSport say black rugby presenters
Four black rugby commentators, including former Springboks Owen Nkumane and Gcobani Bobo, have accused SuperSport’s management of racism.
The Independent Media, Sunday Times and Sport24 all reported on an explosive letter written on their behalf by MVMT Attorneys.
SuperSport’s Head of Communication Clinton van der Berg confirmed the letter.
Seasoned SuperSport anchor Xola Ntshinga and Kaunda Ntunja complete the four represented in the letter.
Sunday’s revelations follow former Springbok winger and SuperSport rugby analyst Ashwin Willemse’s infamous walkout on live television on Saturday, May 19.
Willemse accused studio co-hosts Nick Mallett and Naas Botha of racism.
SuperSport’s executive management and an independent investigation cleared Mallett and Botha of racism claims, but Willemse did not participate in the independent investigation and has, through legal representatives, informed SuperSport he would be taking them to the Equality Court.
The four black presenters accused the pay channel of discrimination, alleged intimidation and victimisation. They also claimed the role of rugby analysts were reserved for white only. The letter also lists a pay imbalance with the accusation being white contractors were paid more than black contractors.
SuperSport, outside of confirming receipt of the legal papers, have not released any official comment.
