The War Room: Springbok halfbacks when injury strikes
The War Room rolls on into Episode 3, where Mark Keohane and Zelim Nel discuss the halfback pairing for the Springboks should Handre Pollard and Faf De Klerk be unavailable for a series decider against the British & Irish Lions.
The show works as such: The Springboks are set to face the British & Irish Lions for a series decider but the entire Rugby World Cup winning XV of 2019 is deemed unavailable for selection. Who fills the boots and how much depth is there for the Springboks to rely on? Fans get to play selector too, on SA Rugby Magazine’s poll.
In Episode 1, the unanimous call was for Springbok veteran Francois Steyn to fire up the back three from fullback in the absence of Willie Le Roux. Episode 2 saw selections of Sergeal Peterson and Sbu Nkosi to solidify the wings were Mapimpi and Kolbe not available, while comeback story of the year Cornal Hendriks lined up at twelve next to the travelled and matured Jesse Kriel at outside centre if Damian De Allende and Lukhanyo Am were struck with injury or illness.
Readers voted similarly but with a slight twist, and you can see the votes here.
This week, you’ll be able to vote for your Springbok scrumhalf and flyhalf if crisis strikes and Faf De Klerk and Handre Pollard can’t run on to face the Northern Hemisphere’s best.
