Aplon confirmed part of Bok squad
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that 17 cap outside back Gio Aplon will be included in his squad for the end of year tour.
Erasmus explained, from camp in Stellenbosch, that the 36 year old’s recall was due to a “lack of wise heads in the back three position”.
Willie Le Roux, who has starred at fullback for the Boks this season, will not be involved in all of the four tests due to club commitments with Wasps, while none of the overseas based Springboks will face England as the match (November 3rd) falls outside World Rugby’s international window.
Damian Willemse seems a likely replacement, however Erasmus said
“A guy like Damian will definitely get his chance over there and Willie will be available for some of the games,” said Erasmus.
“But you’ve got an experienced guy who has played in France and has a great left foot and who is playing brilliant rugby at this stage and who can help.
“I know Aphiwe (Dyantyi) is doing well and S’bu (Nkosi) is doing well, but there are not a lot of old heads around them in terms of helping the back three.
“I might be wrong in terms of that team selection, but I think he is a good fit in terms of leadership and rubbing shoulders with some of the younger guy.”
