De Allende destroys Rebels with raw power
Stormers wing JJ Engelbrecht scored twice in the Stormers 34-18 win against the Rebels. The four tries to two win was never in doubt, with the Stormers leading 17-6 at halftime.
The hosts, unbeaten at Newlands in 2018, extended the lead to 27-6 early in the second half. The visitors scored two tries in the third quarter but the Stormers, thanks to a incisive running from centre Damian de Allende, ended the match with a converted try.
De Allende was powerful in the midfield and he rolled Rebels flyhalf Jack Debreczeni en-route to a try. His distribution was also impressive. This was easily De Allende’s best match of the year.
The Stormers halfbacks Damian Willemse and Dewaldt Duvenage were influential on the back of a dominant Stormers set piece, with Duvenage SuperSport’s Man of the Match.
The bookies had -14.5 handicap on the Rebels and it proved an accurate reflection of their away form. The Rebels, like the Stormers, have been decent at home but poor away from home.
The Stormers, having lost three away South African derby matches to the Bulls, Lions and Sharks, won for just the fourth time in 10 matches.
Stormers coach Robbie Fleck will welcome the win but it was painful at times, especially on a public holiday on a Friday afternoon.
- The Stormers have won five of their previous six encounters against the Rebels, including the last three.
- The Stormers have won 13 of their last 14 regular season games at home against teams visiting from outside South Africa, including each of their last eight such fixtures.
- The Rebels have won only one of 11 games away from home since the beginning of last season (D1, L9), with that sole win coming against the Sunwolves in Round 3 this season.
