Sunwolves claim historic win over Chiefs, Crusaders march on
The Sunwolves rocked the Chiefs to claim their first away Super Rugby victory and the Crusaders were too strong for the Reds.
Brad Weber described the Chiefs’ stunning 30-15 defeat to the Sunwolves as “embarrassing”, while the Crusaders made it three wins out of three at the expense of the Reds to go top on Saturday.
The Sunwolves claimed their first ever Super Rugby away win to keep the Chiefs bottom of the standings, without a victory in their first three matches of the season.
Tries from Shuhei Matsuhashi, Uwe Helu and Gerhard van den Heever and 15 points from the boot of Hayden Parker spoiled Brodie Retallick’s 100th match for the two-time champions in Waikato.
Scrum-half Weber said the Chiefs only have themselves to blame for a stunning setback.
“You’re not going to win the game if you keep coughing up the ball. I think we coughed it up about 10 or 11 times,” said the pivot.
“But you have to take your hat off to the Sunwolves. Their speed of ball and the way they were able to break tackles was pretty special and we have to take a hard look at ourselves because it was pretty embarrassing.”

The Crusaders scored two tries in as many minutes to lay the foundations for a 22-12 win at Suncorp Stadium.
Braydon Ennor and Will Jordan crossed for early scores, with Whetu Douglas and Jordan Taufua going over in the second half in Brisbane.
Tries from Samu Kerevi and Scott Higginbotham could not prevent the Reds from suffering back-to-back defeats.
