Wasps disappointed as Wilson joins Scotland backroom staff
Danny Wilson’s move to Wasps is no longer happening as the club reached an agreement with Scotland for him to be Greg Townsend’s assistant.
Danny Wilson backed out of a deal to move to Wasps so he can join Scotland as Gregor Townsend’s assistant, a decision the Premiership side have described as a “big disappointment”.
Wilson left Cardiff Blues after a three-year spell with the intention of joining Wasps, but Scotland Rugby agreed terms with the club so he could join the national side as they prepare for the World Cup.
Wasps director of rugby Dai Young, who has been thanked by Townsend for agreeing to the move, is frustrated that they could not keep Wilson.
He said: “It’s a big disappointment for us.
“Finding someone of Danny’s quality and experience who is available at this time of year to supplement our existing coaching team is a difficult proposition.
“Disappointing as this is, I understand that the opportunity to coach a tier one international side through to and beyond the World Cup would always be difficult to turn down as opportunities like this do not come around very often.
“Nonetheless, I am confident that Lee Blackett, Andy Titterrell and Ian Costello will do a good job and continue to help me move our squad forward.”
